NAMM badge - looking to transition to the industry

I'm considering a transition to the music industry, from 15 years in Design & Marketing, and was looking to attend NAMM to get a better idea of what's going on.

Anybody have a badge they could offer? (for helping out or a fee)

But you are correct, they extended the electronic registration to 1/5/12 and beyond; so you might still find someone who could get you a yellow visitor or 'Sunday only' visitor badge.

From the badge registration page:

NAMM is not open to the general public and attendees must be in the music products industry or be invited by a NAMM Member.

"In the past, many Members used placeholder names while confirming their guest list in order to meet the December badge deadline. As technology improves, so does the badge registration process. Since we no longer mail out badges, we are able to move the deadline to January 5, so you have more time to confirm your final guest list. There will be a $25 charge for each new name or badge requested after January 5.

  • You will be asked to enter your individual e-mail address.

  • An individual's e-mail address can only be used once.

  • NAMM will automatically send your badge confirmation to the e-mail address provided, which you can print and bring to the show.

  • A reminder e-mail will be sent before the show.

  • A matching photo I.D. is required.

  • Please note: There are no refunds granted.

"Sunday Only" Yellow Badge

The Sunday Only yellow badge gives exhibitors another option.

  • Please take a look at your current yellow badge list, decide who needs to be there all four days and give them the traditional yellow badge.

  • For all the others, give them the Sunday Only yellow badge. We're offering a generous allotment of Sunday Only badges so that you can continue to invite those non-industry guests you’ve been inviting in the past.

  • To clarify, exhibiting companies will have the same number of visitor badges you have always had, and now you will also have a separate and equal allotment of Sunday Only badges.

Well we have had some experience so far in the audio and pro audio industry but it has been in the Design & Marketing side. We've worked on everything from publishing media to museums to hiring musicians for backing tracks on videos and exhibitions etc...

From that our enjoyment has always been in the music side of things so we were considering focusing more on the production of that, however with business experience in marketing there's always the possibility of sales & promotion, not as personally interesting though.

I say we as there is a group of us talking about ideas.

Not sure NAMM is where you want to go based on this response. What do you need to talk to a bunch of manufacturers at an event that is basically a wholesale market for retailers? The manufacturers are sales focused and wanting to write business, not add to the cost of doing business. If you want to go to get an idea of the market and soak up the attitude and vibe, maybe shake a few hands and network, cool. But to go there and hit the booths armed with presentation packets and cards will get you a bunch of file 13's. You are better off hitting the companies up the more normal way. IMHO, of course.

But, if you have 'the gift' and you can make your presence known without interfering with them doing business, cool.

Ya definitely not going as an opportunity to market myself, mostly just to see everything that's out there etc... We're not even 100% on our focus yet so it's more of a research and development approach.

Besides business is business and people just like to talk about the industry and how their business is or could be more successful. Jamming your service or product down someone's throat is never a good idea.

I think it will just be more interesting than anything else.

Thanks for the tidbit.
