Tips on administrating ISRC codes and Gracenote?

Hello all,

I am preparing to press and print one of my first self produced CD projects and I wanted to ask for some advice on handling ISRC codes and the information on Gracenote as I am not familiar with how they work.

As far as I know, ISRC act like bar codes on other products that help keep track of sales or usage of your music. My question is who keeps track of these sales given these unique ISRC codes for you? Is it your 3rd party distribution company? Do you also have to register these codes with Performance societies so they can collect royalties for you? Lastly, when you rip MP3s off your CD, are ISRC codes also copied? If not, should you embed this info manually into the MP3 file, say if you're giving the MP3 to a radio company for airplay?

About Gracenote, I can see that anyone can simply register their music and fill in all CD info on Gracenote's website. My curiosity is how do players like iTunes successfully link the info of any randomly ripped or shared MP3s to the database on Gracenote? Is there some kind of audio recognition technology?

Thanks for any insights!

ISRC international standard code for identifying each individial and unique song title can be registered at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

No. The code is appointed to you, or to your label by IFPI. The ISRC code is added in the mastering as subcode, and the via the code collected data by Radio stations, how many times you song was broadcasted, this data is forwarded to your authors society, then you get your broadcast royalties.
