Use an Accordion, go to jail

Well, it looks like I'll be doing time.

For my current project, the band has a tune that brings to mind a mad carney, shouting through a megaphone, all the while, insane caliope music is going on. It's pretty insane... it's pretty cool.

My original intent was to have the keyboarist play the part on his real accordion to replace a cheesy digital workstaion accordi-thing (ugly). It turns out that pulling off these particular runs are pretty difficult on the real thing so...

I found this for free and it sounds great. "Accordion". I love the name. Uh... what's it sound like? Like an Accordion!

Like any emulation of this type, the results are very dependent on your abilty to play with the right style. If you pound out a C triad, you'll be disappointed. If you lightly do a chromatic run ending in light oohmpah's on 2 and 4... well let's just say, it's a good thing Octoberfest is coming soon.

You'll rarely use it, but when you need it, it's there, and it's FREE.

Hey thanks Lee - I've got a tune I'm working on with an accordion part in it... I'll try that sample and see if I like it better than what I'm currently using. :)

It's not oompahpah music; think more along the lines of Aimee Mann's "Save Me". I don' think you can go to jail for that... ;):D

Cool. And it's not a sample either. It's a synth of some sort I believe, with lots of control to bring in various harmonics. Kind of like a B3's drawbars.

The drawback for a Aimee Mann/Save Me kind of thing is it might not be out of tune/vintage enough sounding for you. Let me know what you think.

I just went with Preset #2 and rocked.

I downloaded the Strings, Piano, Organ and Accordian from this site. They are beginner Synth Edit creations by the looks. And I have news for you - they are very definately samples.

Looping, clicking, aliasing and time-stretch-fartouts and all. Nothing synthetic here folks.

The raw samples are not bad - I do hope they aren't stolen?

It's a pity that the mod wheel or volume pedal isn't mapped to adjust the volume of the organ or accordian - because they really need this. And yet strangely the volume pedal is mapped to wildly pitch bend the piano, which is really Not needed.

As accordion samples go - they are a bit crap when solo'd. I guess the idea is to layer them up, but that isn't very realistic. Still - I have paid for keyboards that have worse sounds than these.

The organ has an unusual approach - the drawbar sounds have leslie sampled in. This isn't so silly with a sampled organ, because unsynchronised sine waves simply don't work in a sampled organ because they are at the mercy of random phase cancellations that really suck. So these all combine to create a fairly thick organic (xcuse the pun) sandwich. Not totally unlike the mellotron organ tapes that the Beatles had - could be useful, if nothing like a Hammond.

The string one has a long, unadjustable decay - sad, because the samples are quite rich.

The piano - sorry, but most small file-size pianos shouldn't exist.

Interestingly - these samples get better at 96kHz (or at least the aliasing on the accordian ceased at 96kHz).

A lot of sample-based VSTi sound worse at 96kHz. I find it pays to check, and even if you're project doesn't run at 96kHz, you can export the audio track from a particular VSTi at whatever rate sounds best, and then re-sample it. A lot of synths sound much better at 96kHZ - but some don't. This is nothing to do with frequencies about 20kHz - it's serious, significant, audible changes - like the aliasing in this case.

Cool... they're samples then. But I've not had better luck getting Accordion sounds. Sorry you didn't like it. I'm only comparing this to the many "Accordion" samples I've tried in workstations and sample playback modules.

To that end, I still like this guy (I can't vouch for the others in the line). My accordion track from this guy sounds like sailors casting off.

Ahoy matey. Play us a tune on yer squeeze box thar, won't cha?

I'm not bagging them - I agree, comparable - maybe better - than many romplers. You can buy better sample libraries, obviously using a lot more memory.

But it would be nice if somebody did a really good accordian VST. Accordians have a limited number of reeds, so it should be possible to sample them all and allow the proper natural combinations, rather than stacking samples unnaturally. That would allow the natural beat notes you get.

Accordians make a different sound when you squeeze compared to when you pull. So it would be nice to have the VST with a mod wheel and volume pedal combination, so you could alternate between squeeze and pull, and pump the volume too.

Any VST designers out there ...?

OK... it seems my suggestion for the Accordion plugin has been met with a resounding "eh".

Fair enough. But have you looked at the price of a sample library of Accordion samples? I kind had to draw the line...

I guess it depends on what you're doing. For me... it absolutely fit the bill.

As they say... your mileage may vary. I swear though, I can still see a bunch of drunken sailors dancing jigs to my sqeezebox riffing. We're still drinking the beer the Germans left behind from the oohpah dance contest...

One of these days, I'm going to install a "suck" knob on something. ;)

For some reason, I also liked "Bobbing for poodles" and "Bummer of a birthmark Hal". I also liked the 'school for the gifted' one where the door says "pull" and the kid is pushing like mad on it, and the one where the kid asks to be excused from class because his brain is full... :D
