Members Ivor The Engine Driver
Hello, I'm wondering if I can do some "homework" recording, using my GarageBand program on my computer to do some guitar tracking -- and then be able to export those tracks to mp3 files and e-mail them over to the engineer working with my band -- who is using a ProTools system. Will he be able to take my mp3s and drop them into the mix without syncinig/latency/other quality issues? (This assumes I track my parts to an exact copy that is the direct length of the rough mix he made for me.) Also, at what bitrate should I save the mp3 files? Thanks! Members EngineGuitarist
i dont have garageband and haent used it. can you export .wav files? if you can email those to the engineer. higher quality and it should be able to be easily added into his DAW. they will be kinda large files so unless you have server space, try using www.yousendit.com that service is great and free. Members Ivor The Engine Driver
ah, good idea. I tried to send him a high-grade MP3 ... we'll see what happens, but otherwise will try to make some waves (pun intended). Thanks! I'm already a fan of yousendit.com -- hoping it always remains a free service.
Members gdoubleyou
I wouldn't use mp3, that format has lossy compression. (some data is discarded) Export .aif or wav, you could also drop the audio into iTunes and use the AAC format. the best would be an uncompressed file, burn a CD if you have to. And yes you should be reording to at least a stereo mix of the acutual session. Be aware that GB is 16bit only, most people record at 24bit resolution. Members where02190
Definitely send him the uncompressed wav or aiff files, not an MP3, which at any sample rate will sound like junk IMHO. Also it will not retain ANY BWF timecode.
