I've recently been approached by a producer of a TV show that airs on a minor cable/satellite TV network about composing a new theme song for their show. Given the fact that they've heard my band's work before, they're probably looking for something along the lines of our style of music, and most likely the name of the TV show in the hook (so this would more likely by a work-for-hire situation that licensing something we have or will be making). Does anyone with experience in this know the usual industry price range that a TV show might pay for this work?

In LA? the sky is the limit $ wise... Is there a contract? I do know the typical up front fee is lower for a TV theme, with per play re$idual$...

This is a potential gold mine (or at least a nugget), depending on how well the show does. You should have an agent working on the deal for you.

Well I'm in Los Angeles but the TV show (and network) is based in the SF Bay Area. It's not on basic cable or anything and it's not really a well-known network or show. We haven't discussed particulars or a contract yet so I just want to know what to expect and to look out for.

els, there really isn't a 'one size fits' all for this type of deal. Part of what has to come into play is what the producer can afford in his budget, since this sounds like a fairly small operation (sorry, I worked in 'the biz' on and off for years). Don't let him lowball you, though. Whatever they offer can be increased to a certain degree (budgets are a hoot in the TV industry, they change minute to minute).

How long is the piece? 30 seconds? 45 seconds? A minute? More?

Is this a regularly scheduled show?

I don't know how long they want the piece for yet, I'm sure the EP will give me that info once I talk to him. The show airs weekly in the evening and is also re-aired late at night.
