Members peteloaf
i'm building a custom body in a couple weeks, v-type shape, gonna have a barknuckle warpig pickup in it. now it's got a nice maple bolt-on neck hoing onto it.. what body wood do you reckon, alder/mahogany? for a nice metal sound, i want the fatness but i also want the high end, and i figure the warpig's got more than enough bass response to cope with a lighter sounding tonewood, so my initial feeling is to go for alder (for the sake of my spine!) any thoughts? Members Bruce Bennett
I'm a mahogany fan myself.. But I have used alder with good results.. But IMHO Mahogany wins out over alder for that really Metal tone. Which I always associate with the Flying V. But thats only an opinion.

Members Burgess
Mahogany. A maple cap would be a layer of maple sandwiched to the mahogany (or alder) to color the tone. This is as opposed to a veneer which would be strictly for cosmetics and would have little effect on tone.
Members Darkstorm
Alder for a more balanced sound and no loss of whatever crunch the pups have. Mahogany if you just want dark and smoother (less crunch then the pups would otherwise bring out) sound. I'd of course go for alder.
