i need to buy a power amp, i've never brought one before and i'm not to sharp on the technical aspects of these things. Basically its to go with my jbl control one monitors. i want to get a decent match. The amp i'm currently using is a pile of junk and all wrong.

I don't know what all the current offerings in power amps are out there, but basically you need a stereo amp that can put out at least 150W (or more) per channel at 4 ohms. Something like a Mackie M-800 or Alesis RA300 should do the trick, and hopefully come in under budget. I'm not sure what the prices on those brands are like in the UK, but in the USA, those would both sell for under $400.

The general rule-of -thumb is to buy an amp that has an RMS rating of twice the speaker rating, so that it doesn't suffer from 'compression' on power-hungry passages. If you're not in a hurry, look around for something used like a Crown. They're kinda the defacto lab/studio brand.

Best, Paul
