Members trswebmaster Posted July 19, 2010 Members Posted July 19, 2010 Hey everyone. I recently started an online music store (no link posting allowed plus I'm not trying to sales pitch) and I feel that it's very user friendly, easy to navigate, etc. I've been asking a few other forum groups about why my sales are non existant as well as my traffic count is ridiculously low (on average about 3 hits a day) and the general reply is that the music industry is just plain slow over all. I'm trying to hit all of the forums that I can to find out if this is true or not. Any input would be awesome. Thank you! Greg
Moderators daddymack Posted July 19, 2010 Moderators Posted July 19, 2010 Sadly, the current economic conditions have many people, even those who are still employed, not spending money on non-essentials, as a hedge against the probablity that they could lose their jobs at any moment.

Moderators daddymack Posted July 19, 2010 Moderators Posted July 19, 2010 there is also the sense of security...I know many people who will only buy from iTunes because of their reputation for security. And .... name recognition is also a big factor; people are generally lazy... yeah, I know it takes so much effort to run a google search
Members Kramerguy Posted July 20, 2010 Members Posted July 20, 2010 Funny thing is itunes SUCKS, I know another site that charges much less per song.
Members Johnny-Boy Posted July 20, 2010 Members Posted July 20, 2010 "I recently started an online music store" -Greg Wondering... how do you acquire music for your online store? John
Members richardmac Posted July 20, 2010 Members Posted July 20, 2010 Funny thing is itunes SUCKS, I know another site that charges much less per song. But I wouldn't buy from it unless it's just as easy to move music to my ipod. I can buy a song and then put it on my ipod with literally two clicks. That's worth money to me. I guess if you don't have an ipod and are used to jumping through hoops to get music onto your handheld, then it doesn't matter much. But there are a lot of people out there with ipods and iphones.

John I'd like to know this too - is it the Top 40 Artists that you hear on the radio? I would think that it would take a lot of advertising to to get the word out that you have an alternative to iTunes, Amazon, and sites like Napster. I think Napster is legit now too. The you run the risk of it not catching on despite your best efforts. But I would expect even trying would cost more than I make in 10 years.... This is assuming you're looking to take on the big guys. I don't know how else you'd get a market share.

With what Apple is charging for their products Kramerguy's reaction come as no surprise. Honestly, I love the Apple hardware and more importantly, I’m a big fan of the Mac OS X (any flavour). However, when it comes to bleeding their potential customers and staunch supporters they’re number one at it. Imagine how many more customers they would win over if their hardware, especially their hardware, and software was more affordable.

However, when it comes to bleeding their potential customers and staunch supporters they’re number one at it. Imagine how many more customers they would win over if their hardware, especially their hardware, and software was more affordable. It wouldn't work for them. Apple has avoided the problems that Dell and some other tech companies have that produce commodities. If you want a "computer," you can go to Dell, or HP, or Sony, or any huge number of other companies. Since they all run Windows and they all run the same software, then the cheapest product wins. So you can buy a computer from virtually anyone, but if you want a Mac, you have to buy from Apple. You can buy a cell phone from anyone, but if you want an iPhone, you buy from Apple. Same with mp3 players. Apple's strategy is to make the best product. If you make the best product, you don't have to, or want to, charge low prices. Are they the best products? Is the Mac the best computer, the iPhone the best phone, and the iPod the best mp3 player? Many people would say no, but many people would say yes. And that's really all you need.

A Mac compatible keyboard costs up to 10x what a PC equivalent costs, or 5x for a mouse, 2-3X for a monitor...and so on....really these items are being made by the same factory...
Members flatfinger Posted July 24, 2010 Members Posted July 24, 2010 . A Mac compatible keyboard costs up to 10x what a PC equivalent costs, or 5x for a mouse, 2-3X for a monitor...and so on....really these items are being made by the same factory... It interesting to note that a similar situation is coming to an end in the automotive industry; Ford is discontinuing the Mercury division . All Mercury did was take a basic ford model , change the grill and trim , fancy up the interior and charge lots more . I'm not an expert on marketing , But I wonder how many people approach it the way you did ( analytically) ....; I don't think most consumers appreciat that a keyboard from apple is pretty much the same a a keyboard from a PC ... Hell even apple is using the very same CPU's now .
Members Kramerguy Posted July 26, 2010 Members Posted July 26, 2010 Everyone did that- Dodge = plymouth Caddy = Buick (I think) Ford = Mercury But all that being said, it's not about the "best" product, as at one time, IMB, dell, compaq, all had the "best". It's about exclusivity, compatibility. when you are the only one(s) who make an item and you make everything on that item proprietary, then you can charge 10x for accessories for absolutely no reason, other than to soak the consumer. Just look at cellphones - a device as simple as a headset with a microphone (hands-free) has been around since about 1965, and the 8th inch jack has been around, and has been the standard since about 1975, and can be bought as cheap as $1.00 at radio shack, wal-mart, or 7000 other retailers. So why does every single cell manufacturer make proprietary connections to the same devices? So they can charge $29.99 and rape you for 2899% extra profits for no good reason, other than that we as consumers accept it and the FTC does nothing to stop it, other than labeling it "predatory" (no {censored} FTC, as if we didn't know we're getting ripped)... So that's why apple SUCKS. oh yeah: One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't
Moderators daddymack Posted July 26, 2010 Moderators Posted July 26, 2010 sadly in 2007, the author had no idea tha tMS would attempt and initially fail at copying MacOS...it was called Vista....and then scaled back and called Windows 7. I have used both, and frankly, I do not own any Aple products...no iPod, no iPhone...because their licensing makes it nearly impossible to make changes to the system to suit the end user...it is a cookie-cutter concept. This is why they donated millions of Macs to schools in teh 80s...to breed Mac users from kindergarten...can you say iMac? A computer with no input device except via the internet?
