Members ChadGrieser1979
hey folks, I've been away from doing any type of recording for about 5 years. I was a novice at doing it but in the meantime i did quite a bit of live sound mixing and such so i actually have a better idea of what's going on with recording and mixing and such. I still have my recording gear, but my old computer died and i now have a laptop. I didn't think of it at the time i purchased it, but it does not have a ieee 1394 port on it and has several usb ports. The gear i used to record onto my computer was 2 Presonus Firepods. I have a dual port WD external hard drive with both usb and firewire ports on the back. Is there ANY way i can use the HD to hook up the firepods to my computer? Do the firepods even work on Windows Vista 64bit laptop? Or am i out of luck? Thanks to you all for the help and advice. What is a good recording software out there for not too much money? Members veracohr
If you're hoping to connect the Firepod via Firewire to the hard drive, then the hard drive via USB to the computer, then you're out of luck. I haven't tried it, but many people seem to like Reaper, which is $40 for the "discounted license".

Members veracohr
Do you have an ExpressCard slot you can put a FW card into?
Phil O'Keefe
Unless there is a hub out there that can convert firewire to USB, you're probably going to have to either get a new audio interface (one that uses USB) or get a new computer. Members WRGKMC
You'll need one of these type cards http://www.usbgear.com/Firewire_PCMCIA_cardbus/ Dont know if that cards the best, but you can shop around or visit a computer store for best pricing vs quality. My buddy uses one and it tends to drop out alot, but you do what you gotta do if thats all you got to work with.
