The music industry is presumably looking forward quite eagerly to the passage of the digital economy bill,
which introduces new measures to punish people who frequently download songs, films and TV programmes illegally and is expected to pass into law next week.

The industry will be aiming to capitalise on the resulting publicity about illegal downloading and the new sanctions in order to start getting more money out of the consumer again. A recent study backed by the TUC and European unions found that a quarter of a million British jobs in the music, film, TV, software and other creative industries and around £218bn in revenue could be lost over the next five years if online piracy continues at its current rate.

That's awesome!!! I just ripped that Piracy Song... for free, of course. I love it - this guy is a spokesman for his generation:

"I'm bad / and I steal / I don't care / I don't feel / I'll take anything you got and I'll put it in my pocket"

But seriously, this that pay for your stolen music concepts is ... I don't even know what to say about it. This guy musta been that toolbag back in gradeschool who raised his hand to remind the teacher that she hasn't assigned any homework yet...

OH!! I have some great business ideas too: a return service for faulty, shoplifted merchandise.... or a Better Business Bureau-type hotline for people duped into buying fake weed and sugar pills....

well, as this is a UK bill...it won't do anythng for the rest of the world...at least not for some time. That said, recognizing the problem needs to be dealth with at the legislative level is a step in the right direction. Maybe we need to give teh UN domain over the internet...oh, wait, then nothing will ever get done about his ...;)

I'm not seeing where the new measures are -- I'm just sayin I'm not finding them -- I think it's more of a me being back from an emegency dentist thing and am pretty zapped

I'm seeing a significant increase (10x) in the ceiling on fines in section 43 , but not really anything new there.

Is it in a different section?
