Members Guitar Centaur Posted August 2, 2005 Members Posted August 2, 2005 I knew jack squat about the band until recently when I heard they are the band that did the famous tune from the movie "That Thing You Do". Somewhere I read that was their big break? True? Any band that sings about MILFs is ok in my book!

Somewhere I read that was their big break? True? Yeah. Well FOW didn't actually perform the song in the movie, but their two songwriters did write the song (and I love that movie!). They've actually been around since the early 90s and, although I dig Welcome Interstate Managers a lot, I like their earlier stuff better... it's a tad less "polished" which I prefer. I'm definitely a sucker for a good power pop song/melody though, and like Lee K. said they have a lot of really inventive slice-of-life kind of lyrics which I dig.
Phil O'Keefe Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Yeah Lee, please do me a favor and back me up with Songrytr about "That Thing YouDo" - he's had my copy of that for months and months now, and he STILL hasn't watched it. BTW, FWIW, I'm a big Weezer fan too - and again, for me, it's about the songs - Rivers is a genius IMO.
Members MarkZ Posted August 3, 2005 Members Posted August 3, 2005 Another "That Thing You Do" fan here. If you like "TTYD", "Grace Of My Heart" is also worth seeing. The Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach song that appears in it, "God Give Me Strength", is just a brilliant piece of craftsmanship.

It is loosely based on the life of Carol King (very loosely). Joni Mitchells ex bassist Larry Klein did the soundtrack and it is fun to try to pick out the references to sixties rock stars in the film.

Members MarkZ Posted August 4, 2005 Members Posted August 4, 2005 I just bought "Out Of State Plates" during lunch today. Only gave it a quick listen and I can already tell it's going to be in my car CD player for a long time. The "Girl I Can't Forget" is SOOOO good. Don't tell the RIAA, but I already ripped a copy of the 2 discs and sent them in a surprise "care package" to my oldest daughter who is away at summer camp. She's going to love it! She already took copies of "Utopia Parkway" and "Welcome Interstate Managers" with her. (I made her copies because I didn't want her to worry about damaging or losing the original discs.)
Members nursers Posted August 7, 2005 Author Members Posted August 7, 2005 "Maureen" is still my fave from OOSP but yep it's an excellent double-set.

Members d. gauss Posted August 15, 2005 Members Posted August 15, 2005 since i turned a lot of people (phil included) on to FOW, i have this to say to those who don't get it.... and this is coming from a guy who likes both motorhead AND abba and makes a living playing the blues.... the daily show, howard stern? tom hanks movies? these are all big ticket residual royalty vehicles. FOW gets a check every month from 'em all. we should all be so lucky (and talented) -d. gauss (now playing: lazer show by FOW

I've been trying to get everyone I know to listen to this song...it's a near perfect example of hyper kinetic hyper structured power pop if ever there was one. Can't stop spinning that tune...those guys have a gift for "first name" songs (Denise, e.g., is also great).

Members Zooey Posted August 17, 2005 Members Posted August 17, 2005 For fans of Fountains of Wayne, I highly recommend Deathray. The new album "Believe Me" is great--but only available directly from the band at this point. $12 well spent. The first album is good, too. http://www.deathraymusic.com/news.html http://www.deathraymusic.com/inthestudio.html
