Music Websites...which are any good / genuine?

You know those websites where you upload your songs and people may actually HEAR them? I've heard about certain music library sites where people who are scouting for music go to and source some songs...do these really exist, or is that too easy?

Also, what about those sites that put your songs on iTunes and all that?

I used Tunecore and have my songs on itunes, amazon, music match, and several others. But you have to keep in mind you're competing with literally millions of other unknowns trying to be heard, and it will get you nowhere to rely on this site or that to 'get your music out there'. You still have to promote your ass off if you want to sell anything at all, because the internet by it's nature is a medium where the public has to come to you to find you. Your job is to make it as easy as possible for them to do so, and once they do, have a product that stands out in it's quality and ease of access. If you're going to have mediocre songs with so-so sounding DIY recordings, don't expect to sell much if anything. Musicians are having a hard time even giving that stuff away because there is just so much of it, and demand is almost non-existent.

I've been doing research on this subject myself, so far the best options appear to be bandcamp and reverbnation (and myspace for networking with other artists). Blue is right about tunecore, they can get you on itunes and I believe amazon. But Amazon also has a platform called Advantage and you can enroll in that and directly sell your cds via cdnow and amazon.

I think each website has its own advantages, Myspace is still the 'go to' website for finding musicians once you know there name. Reverbnation, Garageband, Slicethepie etc. are a bit better for record labels as they offer a sorting filter which makes it easy to find the artists that are getting a lot of attention and support.

As you'd expect though there is no where you can upload your music and get heaps of exposure for little work, it's all about how you promote your profile!

Hope this helps Grace!

These guys are right on the money.

ANY of these sites will work for you, its all about you spending the time to promote the music yourself, and drive the traffic to the site.

Sure there is a slim tiny little chance that some 'random A&R' will land on your site on their own, but you should definitely not think there is one particular site that rules them all.

The best thing you can do is decide upon which ones you want to use,

I personally recommend

A personal website

Facebook

Twitter

reverbnation

sonicbids

If you can get all of these sites in sync with each other, you can easily grow your online presence. You will have to do the work tho, it will not just happen for you.

Tunecore is a great spot to get help get your music out there digitally as well when you are ready to spend some money on it.

Thought I'd chime in with Hellomusic.com...

{Full Disclosure: I work for the company}

It's aiming to be a lot more than the music libraries that are already out there. One major difference is that we give constructive feedback for each release submitted.

We're just starting, and at the moment we're still sending out invites, but ask and you should receive. You can read more about us on the site, but it's pretty much exactly what the OP was wondering about.
