Members Alndln2 Posted August 13, 2005 Members Posted August 13, 2005 Well,it looks like Mike Love and Bruce Johnston have " licensed " the Beach Boys name for a tour.I just saw them live on NBC's today show this morning and was reminded of the ravages of Capitalism.I know they got bills too,but......geez,this sounded awful and definitely tarnishes any memorys. At least Al Jardine doesn't call his thing the "Beach Boys" and does fairly well(Endless Summer).Brian I guess is the architecht and should be able to play anything he wants during his solo tour under his own name, that I can swalow a lot easier.I can see this " licensecing" thing getting out of hand in a lot of potential situations.Maybe we need to revise some laws.
Members russrags Posted August 13, 2005 Members Posted August 13, 2005 I saw them a couple years ago as it was "something" for out of town company to do. They "Lip Synced" the whole show and sounded like they were all 18 again. Not interested ... even though "409" get's me everytime I'm going to start asking for my money back .. every time I hear a band lip sync. I've already got the record, if I wanted to play it I would .. I want to hear it LIVE. Russ

Members Paully Posted August 14, 2005 Members Posted August 14, 2005 Some years ago, we booked the Drifters as a star act at a local venue. They were so good, and did so well that we booked them at two other locations within the next few months. I attended all three appearances that summer, and not once did the same group appear. All were good, just completely different personal. When researched, apparently whoever owned the rights to the 'Drifters' name was signing off on this practice, and apparently had ten or more groups in my area out working. All legal. God forbid, but mabee next time you hear 'Little Deuce Coupe' or '409', Clay Aikens will be fronting! :D [ Paul
Members MarkZ Posted August 15, 2005 Members Posted August 15, 2005 IIRC, Love actually bought the rights to the "Beach Boys" name from Brian Wilson many years ago. Years ago, Al Jardine was performing with Brian Wilson so there were more original Beach Boys on stage with Wilson than with Love. It's really great the hear Brian Wilson's 10 piece touring band. They play Beach Boys' music as close to note perfect as possible. When I saw Wilson a few years ago, I remember 9 or the 10 members sing so you can imagine how far that goes toward reproducing the original vocal arrangements. Brian, however, is difficult to watch perform. There, but not there.
Members Anderton Posted August 15, 2005 Members Posted August 15, 2005 Saw the "Beach Boys" on some 4th of July show on TV. It was painful, although the guitarist had a pretty good voice. The Brian Wilson thang is much better IMO.
Members Jotown Posted August 15, 2005 Members Posted August 15, 2005 There are at least 4 differnt versions of the Temptations touring as we speak. My former band perfoms with the Ollie Woodson version, and they used to back up the Dennis Edwards version. The "Original Tempations" have only Otis left and they are still doing 150 dates per year. It is odd and strange, as is the music biz as a whole.
