I've seen ads for these and our little jazz group only need the 4 channels. I've seen them for $500 to $1200 and some burn Cd's. All have about 120 hour capability. I thought since they are direct input form your amp that it would be a way to get a CD of our group out there for sale. We don't need anyone to mix our music or anything. Has anyone ever used one of these?

The Alesis Masterlink is still a pretty good choice, because you can also do some decent "mastering" processing...as well as do 24-bit references if you want. They're not that expensive....let me check...

Okay, I just went to Musician's Friend -- yeah, why not do something nice for the people paying the bills? -- and saw they're going for $799.

Here's a link for more info.

I also checked Sweetwater and Masterlinks are going for about the same price there too.

No standalone CD burner that I've ever encountered will record 4 channels.

For the amount of money you mention ($1200) , you could get a laptop with 60 GB drive, CD burner & 4 chan. audio interface (USB, for example), plus Adobe Audition software to record 4 channels of audio.

You could buy all this, and still walk away with maybe $400 of your cash left over.

OK, just so I'm clear --

you are looking for an audio recording system as opposed to a CD burner (for duplication or porting of a file you've recorded through other means)?

have you considered dividing the activities? (ie does it have to go directly to CD at the get,go or is uploading and doing the work on desktop OK)?

Now I'm confused. I though he was going to take a signal from the amp that didn't need mixing. Is four channels of recording necessary? If so, the comment about a laptop/interface/software that can burn CDs (e.g., Audition) is spot on.

Masterlink is designed for capturing a stereo performance (in 24 bits if needed), massaging it with the internal processors, then burning a CD, without tying up a computer.
