Members lowbasslowbass Posted August 17, 2005 Members Posted August 17, 2005 I used DR roundwound strings for a long period of time. Now I only use Thomastiks. I have more than 30 sets of DR nickel roundwound strings sitting in a box. It just doesn't feel right to me to just throw them away. Any ideas on what to do with them?

You save your old strings:confused: I'm thinking you are a single man;) My wife would have thrown them out long ago. Maybe you can make mobiles out of the strings, or boil them and sell them at a discount to poor students?
Members squealie Posted August 17, 2005 Members Posted August 17, 2005 When I was 17, I saved the ball ends for like a year, and made my gf a bracelet. That was dumb.
Members Billster Posted August 17, 2005 Members Posted August 17, 2005 If they are "new in box" there's eBay If they are used, and you have been saving them, you are a wierdo.
Members blackpig Posted August 17, 2005 Members Posted August 17, 2005 When I change strings I always keep the old set for emergency spares. But just one set - I throw older ones away. A friend of mine used to like using my old strings to make rabbit snares. We both gave that up because we think it's a bit cruel even though I do enjoy cramming a bunny into my gaping maw once in a while. I once tried boiling my strings. I put them in a pan of water and left them on the cooker and then the Beverly Hillbillies came on the T.V. By the time the Hillbillies had strutted their funky stuff the strings had reduced nicely down to a rusting stinking mass of strangeness destroying the pan. Me Ma went ape {censored} and chased me around the kitchen in her slippers trying to hit me with her gin bottle. I ran into the living room where Granny was sitting naked in a tin bath by the fire (it was Saturday). Me Ma tripped over the tin bath and Granny got a belt of the gin bottle making her new teeth fall into the hot water. By the time she fished them out they were all warped and wouldn't fit in her gob properly. It was quite a sight to see Granny standing shrivelled, wrinkled, naked and steaming in her curlers shouting"Yiz fuzzin' barsterz. Yiz have ruined me new theeef."while me ma sat nursing a twisted ankle. It's best to throw old strings away.

Or just weave them and frame it as modern art. *guess how i know this

Members Calfee Jones Posted August 17, 2005 Members Posted August 17, 2005 Maybe you could weave them into a small rug... Or maybe a bullet-proof vest (depending on what types of places you play)...

Members lowbasslowbass Posted August 17, 2005 Author Members Posted August 17, 2005 I want to donate them to people who don't afford to buy new strings. Any help appreciated!

Members offramp Posted August 18, 2005 Members Posted August 18, 2005 If they're new, and in the box, I'll buy a few sets of them. I love DR strings.
Members Jotown Posted August 18, 2005 Members Posted August 18, 2005 Used as in "Put on a bass guitar, played for a while, and then removed?

I'll have to see if anyone in Des Moines carries them.
Members lowbasslowbass Posted August 19, 2005 Author Members Posted August 19, 2005 Well, I used DR nickel roundwounds for many years. I was a happy user, although they are a bit expensive - especially when you gig a lot. Then I decided to try flatwound strings for a change, and the Thomastiks were the top choice. Everyone I asked was extremely happy with them, so I thought I sould give them a try. I prefer flatwounds from roundwounds now. Plus I can use a set for a really long long time.
Members Mr. Donovan Posted August 19, 2005 Members Posted August 19, 2005 Thanks lowbasslowbass! Hey, maybe you could use all those old strings to put together a large harp like instrument.
Members lowbasslowbass Posted August 19, 2005 Author Members Posted August 19, 2005 Yes, I have thought about that, too. But I don't have the skills to build something that can stand the tension of all those strings... Would sound really cool, I am sure about that.

I actually laughed out loud, and I NEVER do that. Thanks.
Members Jotown Posted August 22, 2005 Members Posted August 22, 2005 You should have your girlfriend use the strings to knit you a bullet proof vest.
