Members Billster Posted August 19, 2005 Members Posted August 19, 2005 Everybody gets a greatest hits album! The telling quote for me: A more critical issue, record companies say, is the decreasing shelf space to carry an artist's catalog. With the advent of Wal-Mart and Target as major record stores, there are fewer outlets where you might find several different albums from one artist. I don't buy music at places like Wal-Mart and Target for a number fo reasons, but here's another. "A hits collection doesn't necessarily always have to be 16 No. 1 songs," Jones said. Which is good news for the PM Dawns, Lisa Stansfields and Color Me Badds of the world -- who all have greatest-hits albums. Color Me Badd? I had to learn a song for a gig once and ended up buying a cassette titled "The Best of White Lion". I thought it would actually be a blank tape.
Members Base Posted August 19, 2005 Members Posted August 19, 2005 A lot of teeny bopper boy bands here that you probably (for your sake I hope not anyway!) haven't ever heard of do this. I keep joking that if my band ever records anything, we'll call the frst disk Greatest Hits I think Take That (truly dire early 90's boy band, who did at least kick off Robbie Williams career) released one after 2 albums?!? Queen managed 2 Greatest Hits a decade apart (I'm not counting that 3rd cash-in one) that was all stuff you;d heard of, no new filler tracks!!! THAT'S when you release Greatest Hits!!!!!
Members Help!I'maRock! Posted August 19, 2005 Members Posted August 19, 2005 i try to stay as far away from GH albums as possible. what really gets me is when a band has like 3 albums, and then they release a hits album.
Members boosh Posted August 19, 2005 Members Posted August 19, 2005 What we need is a Bruce Swedien greatest hits album,..... It's a shame general population don't know who he is,...... It'll be a true smasher,..way better and in another league than that stupid Bill Clinton album that was released this week.
Moderators Lee Knight Posted August 19, 2005 Moderators Posted August 19, 2005 I'm getting into Greatest Hits albums lately. It's a great way to enjoy a band that may have had inconsitent output but has some gems in there too. If someone wants to hear White Lions 3 "not-so-horrible" tunes, a GH's is going to be their ticket to big hair nirvana. Greatest Hiit albums I've bought recently... Sir George Martin came out with an album a few years ago called my life. He set the precedent for this concept. Instead of releasing a collection of previously recorded songs, he got several friends to do new renditions with the original music. The best was Jim Carrey doing 'I am the Walrus". Others were Jeff Beck (instrumental Day in a Life), Sean Connery reciting "IN MY Life" to the music, Goldie Hawn, Celene Dion, Phil Collins, etc. It was actually an excellent and fun album to listen to. I have it and never grow tired of it. Some of the renditions are more interesting than the originals by the Beatles. As far as the general population not knowing who he is, I would venture to bet that Bruce and Bea probably prefer the anonymity.

Same songs, different performers.... About prefering anonimity,.... I run into his book everywhere on the net.... I love that cover. Funny Bruce didn't record I am the Walrus,.... I can make a perfect link to that song when I look at his bookcover

It's a shame general population don't know who he is,...... I think there should be a greatest hits album for the studio musicians who made so many contributions. Imagine a Tommy Tedesco greatest hits album. I think we should start with Tommy Funderburk. In case you're curious, Tommy Funderburk has appeared on albums by Whitesnake and Lee Ritenour. Who else can make this claim? Don't ask how I know this. I'll tell you. Years back, a friend and I were taping some of each other's albums, one of which was Lee Ritenour's "Earth Run". One track had some vocals by Tommy Funderburk. My friend was writing all of these credits off the album sleeve to go along with his tape, and suddenly announced: "Why am I doing this? I don't care about Tommy Funderburk. I want to hear this album because Ritenour's using the Synthaxe. Am I ever going to care who did background vocals on one track out of the whole album" A few years later I had the Whitesnake album with Steve Vai on it, and I noticed Tommy Funderburk credited with backing vocals.
Members Anderton Posted August 19, 2005 Members Posted August 19, 2005 I dunno, some greatest hits album save me a lot of effort...I bought Madonna's "Immaculate Collection," it has all the songs of hers that I like without having to wade through a bunch of CDs. But I agree that it's getting out of hand, one-hit wonders with "Greatest Hits" albums. Hasn't Britney Spears done two of them already?!?
Members deanmass Posted August 20, 2005 Members Posted August 20, 2005 I have a lot of them due to DJing. The Madonna Cd in particular was about worn out. Craig, what did you think of the Ray of Light Cd? I was impressed. Overall, I think GH CD's have their place. I picked up the Smashing Pumpkins CD last week cause I had nothing by them and run hot and cold on them, but, it had a couple fantastic songs fo theirs and it was like 9 bucks. Most of the bands that are getting jabbed for GH CD's have not been around long enough to have compiled a CD of hits.
