Members Anderton Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 Okay, betting pool time! They bought M-Audio, they bought Wizoo...who's next? You're head of Digi, you have a ton of money, you look on the musical landscape and you decide to buy... Well, who would you buy?
Phil O'Keefe Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 You left off the Bomb Factory plug-ins purchase Craig. I don't know who they are going to go after next... maybe Dell? I mean, if Apple can purchase Emagic, why not turn it around the other way?
Members Anderton Posted August 26, 2005 Author Members Posted August 26, 2005 And before that, didn't they buy Koblo? Whatever happened to those guys, anyway?
Phil O'Keefe Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 I have not seen anything about Koblo for a long time now... I didn't know Digidesign purchased them. Going back to the Apple / Emagic thing, Digi distributed C-Lab's software back in the late '80's / early '90's... and of course, C-Lab was the predecessor of Emagic... If I was king kahuna tuna at Digidesign, I'd buy SSL... no wait! Peter Gabriel already beat them to that one. Okay, seriously, I think I'd put money into top shelf plug in developers... not just buying them out, but into partnership and development deals. Enhance the third party support across the board. Oh, and as long as I'm the boss, we WILL be doing editable MIDI notation in our next PT release - if that means we have to buy another software company to do it, so be it. Being the boss has its perks, and that's one of my biggest beefs with PT, so hey, I'd definitely address that.
Members Johnny Storm Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 Have they tried to buy Focusrite yet? I could see them buying Waves. Maybe they could buy Frontier Design Group and market the TranzPort as a Digi product.

Avid should buy Twelve Tone Systems to acquire the Cakewalk line, then implement SONAR MIDI capabilities into PT software.
Members Anderton Posted August 26, 2005 Author Members Posted August 26, 2005 But Sonar isn't cross-platform...
Members Anderton Posted August 26, 2005 Author Members Posted August 26, 2005 I'd buy some small, hip company with a new kind of storage technology and become their main customer...but also sell to others.
Moderators Lee Knight Posted August 26, 2005 Moderators Posted August 26, 2005 Waves, Antares, Propellerheads, Line 6 (RTAS Amp Farm?)

Members spokenward Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 Presonus? I could see them buying Waves.Maybe they could buy Frontier Design Group and market the TranzPort as a Digi product. Yamaha has an investment in Waves, but I like that TranzPort idea. They could also complicate Tascam's life with a stake in Frontier.

Members Robman2 Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 That's an interesting question Craig, something I hate hearing when an interview is taking place on TV but I had to say it. I'd look into broadcasting, the whole NAB and Infocomm crowd, for AVID...much larger then Digi's pie piece MI/ Pro side.
Members Johnny Storm Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 Originally posted by Anderton But Sonar isn't cross-platform... Are you implying that it would be too difficult to figure out how to implement Cakewalk MIDI capabilities for Mac? I'd bet that, between the brilliant programmers at Twelve Tone Systems and the cross-platform coders at Digi, they could probably handle the task. Of course, this is not a prediction - I don't think Avid would ever buy Twelve Tone Systems. More likely, as Linwood suggested above, they'd try to buy MOTU, which is also not cross-platform. I could see Avid attempting to buy IK Multimedia or Propellerhead Software down the road, if they haven't already.
Members Johnny Storm Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 BTW, when I said MOTU is not cross-platform, I was specifically referring to DP software, not MOTU hardware products.

Members Red Winger Posted August 26, 2005 Members Posted August 26, 2005 Seems to me that they've done pretty well with processor plug-ins, but have not much in the way of instrument plug-ins. Now that Logic and other sequencers are including a lot more VIs, I would think they'd want to even that front up more. Propellerheads or IK Multimedia, maybe, but wouldn't it be interesting if they made a play for somebody like Native Instruments? Probably too many issues there. Maybe Arturia? Just random musings. --Mark

Nope. AVID Unity is where they are staking their claim. there's actually a great small company called studio network solutions, who have a great iSCSI setup, but Digi has kinda given them the cold shoulder... -Todd A.
Members Lee Flier Posted August 27, 2005 Members Posted August 27, 2005 Don't they just want our immortal souls, first born children, etc.?
Members dcwave Posted August 28, 2005 Members Posted August 28, 2005 If I was Digi/Avid and wanted to squash the native market...I'd buy Powercore or UAD and lock the cards to my software/soundcards
Members joel Oporto Posted August 29, 2005 Members Posted August 29, 2005 I thought Focusrite is owned by digidesign, thats why you have focusrite pres in the m-box, my bet is Mackie, apogee, avalon or MOTU, motu and apogee to eliminate competition, and mackie to get one up in the mid-price categories.
Members providman Posted August 29, 2005 Members Posted August 29, 2005 On the video side , I'm pretty sure they just bought Pinnacle(a video competitor of Avid).
