Members Turner Posted August 29, 2005 Members Posted August 29, 2005 Hi everybody, I'm new to this Forum.First of all hi to Craig, I attended some workshops with you a few years ago.I'm thinking about updating my studio.I'm still on Protools 24 and I'm using Logic too.I'm thinking about going completely Logic with an RME AD/DAFireface. I'm using Midi a lot and also audio.I was wondering if there are people who have used or tried both. ( Protools HD and Logic 7.1 with RME ).Is there a big difference sound quality wise between the HDconvertors and RME ?I agree that Protools is handier when recording audio, but I really need a good Midi environment. Any remarks on this ?Thanks for your answers !
Members Anderton Posted August 29, 2005 Members Posted August 29, 2005 I have not used the HD converters, but I can certainly vouch for RME's sound quality. It's worth noting that many products in the same price range use the same chips and same basic circuits. The main differences seem to be in PC layouts, grounding, etc. which can influence jiter and such. Frankly, I think it's getting to the point where differences in sound quality are getting pretty minimal. Even the converters in budget gear are way superior to the "best" converters of just a few years ago.
Members Dylan Walters Posted August 29, 2005 Members Posted August 29, 2005 My friend just moved over from a TDM/888/24 setup to a Logic 6 setup with the RME Fireface and he swears by it! The Fireface sounds much better in his opinion. Sorry that I can't comment on the HD system as I haven't used it.

Members Robman2 Posted August 30, 2005 Members Posted August 30, 2005 Conversion chips at RME are always going forward, the HD 96 and 192, are now three years old. RME prides themselves on that. www.synthax.com if you need to ask them directly what generation they are using. There are also more contemporaneous chip sets now from Apogee, DB Technologies, Pyramix, Mietner etc.
Members Anderton Posted August 31, 2005 Members Posted August 31, 2005 FYI Synthax gives absolutely incredible tech support. They know their stuff and can get anything working. I think the reason it's so good is because they don't have to do a lot of support for RME, so they have plenty of time on their hands
