Members Geoff Grace Posted August 31, 2005 Members Posted August 31, 2005 I don't know about you; but with all of the focus on the human tragedy unfolding on the Gulf Coast, it took me until today to consider the toll on our music heritage that has taken place in the birthplace of jazz. While this is of secondary consideration as the death and devastation toll mounts, I can't help but wonder what artifacts have been lost to future generations. The scope of the damage caused by hurricane Katrina just boggles the mind... Best, Geoff
Members Slowly Posted August 31, 2005 Members Posted August 31, 2005 Just happened to either see an article, documentary, or maybe it was when I was at the Kansas City airport. But they said, believe it or not that Kansas City is the real birthplace of jazz!?! And the major players migrated to New Orleans. Slowly:confused:
Members Tedster Posted August 31, 2005 Members Posted August 31, 2005 When were ya here, Slowly? I think you'd probably find (as with most stuff) that various cities contributed to the development of an art form. Kansas City certainly has a rich jazz heritage.
Members where02190 Posted August 31, 2005 Members Posted August 31, 2005 I just googled "birthplace of jazz", and every site I got says NO.

Had a two hour layover before connecting to Seattle. I found this article describing New Orleans being the birthplace of jazz as more 'propaganda' than truth. The Great American Big Bands. But I don't know, I only believe the things that happened after I was born. Slowly
