Members restart Posted January 15, 2010 Members Posted January 15, 2010 Hey all...tota-noob here. I'm basically a songwriter, at least I fancy my self that. Never done this before but I need to hire out some vocalists, guitarists to record the parts I've written seeing as I'm an awful singer and guitarist. What should I look out for? Should I talk to an attorney? Seek a manager? Make people sign contracts prior to anything? Incorporate and then hire people out as a publisher not an individual? This is new territory for me and if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful. Online resources, what you may have done before, etc.. I want to be absolutely fair to everyone concerned and it appears to me that doing this is a little more complicated than hiring a plumber. Thanks.
Members Dthraco Posted January 15, 2010 Members Posted January 15, 2010 "Songwriting for Dummies" has some good info on hiring out other musicians. I just finished reading it, good book on songwriting as well. You can post craigslist ads to find amateur musicians. Or you can find local studio's and hire studio musicians. Just depends on what your budget/goal is.

Members restart Posted January 17, 2010 Author Members Posted January 17, 2010 First, I will assume you are planning to record these correct? So, if that is the goal, how is your music written out for presentation to musicians? Next, are you producing the recording, and if so, do you know exactly what you want? I want my material recorded. The material is totally done with the exception that it currently has a cheesy synth guitar playing the parts I want and my heinous sounding, but completely on pitch, totally Auto Tuned voice performing the melody and lyrics in the manner that I need. I've got proper sheet music with tabs and a piano line playing the melody should hearing my vocals prove to be too distracting. In essence, I need sound replacement. I've known people who've let knowledgeable, experienced musicians they've hired "add" their two cents to existing material and then have to battle them as they tried to become co-authors of the material. Conversely, I also realize people hire people all the time without issue. I'm just trying to make sure that I've dotted all my i's and crossed all my t's before I go ahead.
Members Sheraton Player Posted January 17, 2010 Members Posted January 17, 2010 There are some good online session musicians - you send them a mix, they record their parts, charge you a small fee, and send you them back. These are two I use... www.drumsnpercussion.com Fantastic drummer and percussionist. www.studio-aid.com I also use him for brilliant drums... but he also does guitar and bass, AND can produce the whole project, start it from scratch for you. So if you find a singer, he might be the only other guy you need. The two above cost roughly about $50 per song for drums (I don't know about production and stuff). I also know of a VERY good online keyboard player, with all the real instruments (piano, hammond organ, wurlitzer, etc), but he costs quite a bit more.
