Members Matximus Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 Ya'll that roasted me for stealing songs a few months ago should love this: iTunes just erased the hundreds of songs I've stolen since I discovered download sites like Mp3raid in October. The highlights from the new Weezer record (Can't Stop Partying, I want you to). Lily Allen's "{censored} You." Pearl Jam's "Fixer." The song that first sent me down the path of ripping free tunes, Daughtry's cover of "Poker Face." Even the fracking Monkees, whom I just started ripping yesterday just for the hell of it (they have some surprisingly good stuff - seriously - "You Just May be the One" is a freaking gem)... It's all gone. I'm pissed. I had them all stored on my iPod. The latest version of iTunes erased all strange files off my device. Even the songs I uploaded from other people's iTunes. It's totally whack. So I'm at a crossroads. I didn't pay for any of these tunes. I did feel like a total prick for stealing them. I've never told anyone that I'm a free music feign. I'm ashamed. My wife has no idea. My friends are in the dark. I love music. I really do. And they were never mine. These tunes. I can start fresh. Wipe the slate clean. My library is pretty much slashed to records and downloads I actually paid for while I was still a rube... I can walk the righteous path... Because, really, I've discoverd that free music and great and all, but Downloading free stuff is a major pain in the ass too. Nobody talks about that. You have to sort through scores of {censored}ty compressed files to find a decent copy that doesn't bleed your ears. Also, you have to wade through bunches of lame-ass remixes of hot new songs before you find the cool familiar radio cut. I mean, I've seriously considered paying for more than one record when the hassle of finding a free copy became too much. Try finding a clean copy of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." Needle in the god-damn haystack. Ah {censored}. Who am I kidding? I have another browser downloading Gaga's Summerboy as I'm typing this. I'm gonna stay up till four a.m. restocking my playlist... I mean. {censored}. These songs are free. It's the best thing ever. I also just read about that artist Zac Brown burning up the charts. Gotta find out what that's all about.... He sings about Fried Chicken or something. Sounds awesome.

Members BlueStrat Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 How is getting stuff you stole taken away from you getting 'kicked in the balls?' Looks more like karma to me. The guys getting kicked in the balls are the guys losing revenue to theft.

Members RadiationNation Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 More likely, it's karma for listening to {censored}ty music. The Daughtry cover of "Poker Face"?
Moderators daddymack Posted January 7, 2010 Moderators Posted January 7, 2010 I applaud the iTunes people's diligence... Matxi, think about it..you have been (sort of) given absolution for your past sins, the slate was clean, and now...you go forth and sin again?
Members Scafeets Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 Same as it ever was...........
Members Kramerguy Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 Max, I hate you simply because your actions have put me on the same team as Bono. I hate Bono. Now I gotta embrace him. Mucho bad karma to you.
Members Mcfontio Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 Maybe music production will just cease to exist because nobody pays for it. :poke:
Members Giorgi Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 Maybe when it's actually about to cease to exist - they will enforce laws like in Sweden (let's not kid ourselves, labels still have huge profits, if not they wouldn't be making any music. Period.)
Members paulz Posted January 7, 2010 Members Posted January 7, 2010 The laws might to be changed some before that happens because it's not a crime here until you juice at least $1000 worth in a 180 day period or resell it or distribute something before its real release, that's when the gubment gets in -- before that it's lawsuits like when the RIAA sues someoneThe big crime ones get some enforcement, but everyone is bitching so much about 'Homeless grandma sued by the RIAA' that they don't even bother to think about Fastlink or D-elite or any of that. I think Fastlink is up to like 60 convictions now, but I bet less than 10% of people have even heard of those because headlines like cops catch crooks doesnt turn heads like non-profit kitten sanctuary worker bankrupted by evil empire and it's easier to be spoon fed.
Members Matximus Posted January 8, 2010 Author Members Posted January 8, 2010 I know!!! I'm a total jerk. Whatever. I'm not losing sleep over it, though. Record sales haven't plummetted by 50% since 2000 because Matximus discovered an awesome Daughtry cover in October.... And that song rocks awesome balls by the way Mr. Elitist music snob. Anyway. Time will absolve me: I'm betting that within five years all music will be streamed on the internet to PDAs. The idea of even wasting time to steal a digital file will be laughably quaint. Just like a walkman, or walking into a store and buying a CD....
Members paulz Posted January 8, 2010 Members Posted January 8, 2010 I know!!! I'm a total jerk. you got that right Anyway. Time will absolve me: I'm betting that within five years... You got that wrong. youve got a basic logic flaw.
Members Kramerguy Posted January 8, 2010 Members Posted January 8, 2010 It's funny, THIS guy had the exact same cocky attitude.

The idea of even wasting time to steal a digital file will be laughably quaint. Just like a walkman, or walking into a store and buying a CD.... "Just like a Walkman" I feel is possibly right. The goal of music companies seems to (rightly) be these days not to completely eliminate MP3 trading, but to eliminate *organized* MP3 trading. If big centralized sites fall by the wayside (very possible but it's going to be a while), MP3 trading will still exist. But it will be more like the tape trading days of old, harder to find and use, especially for non-techies. Big libraries of personalized, streamed music, that's easy to access anywhere, seems to be a trend. (Yes these streams of course can be ripped, but only by tech-heads.) If done right, I can see it making a dent in MP3 piracy, probably more so than legal action actually. And in other ways, hell, that would be big companies' dream in many ways -- they can keep *exact* statistics of what songs are hot and steer promotion instantly. The developing world will be the music industry's biggest challenge IMHO. Most of Asia doesn't give a {censored} about copyright law.
Members paulz Posted January 8, 2010 Members Posted January 8, 2010 Yes these streams of course can be ripped, but only by tech-heads.. tech heads and anyone who can press the record button icon on a ripping app
Members Kramerguy Posted January 8, 2010 Members Posted January 8, 2010 As someone mentioned (either here or in another thread)- they certainly found a way to inhibit the online streaming and sharing of child porn.. If they can limit that, they can limit this. It's all a matter of priority.
Members BlueStrat Posted January 8, 2010 Members Posted January 8, 2010 Record sales haven't plummetted by 50% since 2000 because Matximus discovered an awesome Daughtry cover in October.. No, it's plummeted because of an army of guys like you. That's the weakest rationalization I think I may have ever seen. It's a bit like saying "well, the meth industry didn't skyrocket just because I bougt a few bags of crank." If you participate at all, you're contributing to the problem. Yours is just a matter of degree.
Members BlueStrat Posted January 8, 2010 Members Posted January 8, 2010 It's funny, THIS guy had the exact same cocky attitude. Looks like he still does, portraying himself as the victim.

I think it's pretty OK to jack up kiddie porn as higher priority than music piracy - one's human abuse the other one is property abuse. To make em the same we'd need to juice the copyright laws a tonThe 'they' is us too tho - if we really thought a guy was downloading kiddie porn while typing his posts bet our reactions would be pretty hard like maybe the mods getting the feds on him.

My point was that all the argument over the idea that the "authorities" can't stop piracy is bunk. And, like I said, it's all a matter of priority. How many people do 70 on the highway, every day? How many bitch and moan on the ONE day the cops decide to stop people and write speeding tickets? It's pretty much what they do with piracy right now. They need to ramp it up so people like the OP, who basically flaunt their discretion, will get nailed more often
