What is your definition of "making it?"

- What's your definition of "making it" in the music business?

- Who do you personally know who has already done this?

- What will you do in 2010 to help you accomplish some or all of your goals?

My idea of making it is being able to make things work. If I can get to a point where I can pay my bills off performing and recording music and still have enough left over for new gear and small entertainment purchases, I've made it.

My friends in the band Dubconscious have "made it" imo. They can afford to pay their bills off of touring and selling merch. They usually play in front of around 500-1,000 people (depending upon the venue size) and can get away with selling t-shirts, sweatshirts and other merch. for a higher prize than what normal regional bands charge.

To accomplish my goals in 2010, first I need to start or join another band :) I'd like to perform locally or possibly hit up some key areas in my tri-city radius. In addition, I would like to record 10-12 songs and split them up into 3 or 4 different eps to be distributed for free at shows. I plan purchasing a cheap inkjet printer to print out the initial copies of the cds, but then go to kunaki for short run orders if I notice that more people are accepting the music.

Cool thread.

- My definition of making it would be double :

1. Just like you defined it, moderate success enjoying what you do.

2. Having a hit record that would eventually top the charts and such (for the fame and the profit). One "huge hit" CD is fine by my standards, as long as the label doesn't take all the money.

-I know nobody who's done any of this personally. I'm not involved in the "scene" at all, don't know most bands and don't like any of those I know.

-I'm in the process of writing and recording an EP, alone, at home. I play guitar, sing, the rest of the song is made in FL Studio with EZ Drummer for very realistic drum sounds and I might borrow a bass. I will start giving out 1-2 songs to my friends for free - my philosophy is to see if they "really" like it (you know when people are really, really happy about something you do), if it starts spreading in the college circle it means that the songs are good enough. If not I'll rework the material.

After I'm done with the first 4-5 songs (I also plan on making the album art) I will start "remixing" the songs, because for now I have no idea of how to mix things properly. I have to learn the EQ/mastering process and then apply it to my own work (which one shouldn't do, but I'm just that hopeless). After that is done, and I'm kind of happy with the songs I'll put them iTunes/facebook/whatever - hopefully by this time I'll have a small following and might start thinking about playing 1-2 shows.

I might also do a couple of GOOD acoustic covers on YouTube - there's a bunch of "OK" singers with huge subscription numbers out there that just play acoustic guitar in front of the camera. This might allow to grab some additional listeners.

Whatever I need to do to make sure that when my feet hit the carpet first thing in the morning I'm a gaddamn musician that day. Same goes for later that night when I pick them up off the ground and slip back into bed.

That's it.

Oh.....and maybe a little health insurance. I hate toothaches like a mother {censored}er!

Hmm...for me, making it is this:

-Touring as much as possible with my music. Small label or DIY, doesn't matter.

-While on tour, I write/produce hip hop/pop tracks to sell to artists/bands when I'm off tour.

-When I'm not touring I come back home my calendar is filled up with bands to produce (I've met/played shows with while touring) that want their records to have similar sonic qualities as mine.

-Get my music in Film/TV and do film scores.

-Mixing gigs when I'm not touring.

-Work on next record...start the process over.
