Members Dancebass Posted December 2, 2009 Members Posted December 2, 2009 I heard an add this morning on the radio for a tour that's coming through town. NickelbackBreaking BenjaminShinedown I think it's called the ZZZZZZZZ tour. I was thinking that I should go down and pretend to be an offended christian and protest the corrosive evils of rock music just to confuse the hell out of everyone.
Members sabriel9v Posted December 2, 2009 Members Posted December 2, 2009 Stop listening to the radio!!!! Thats how you end up going crazy man.
Members Matximus Posted December 2, 2009 Members Posted December 2, 2009 Nickelback are world famous kick-ass rock stars. You're not and never will be. Any of you. Get over it. They rock. And their last record went two times platinum last year. I don't care who you are: That's a fantastic achievement in this day and age. I give them props.
Members Dancebass Posted December 2, 2009 Author Members Posted December 2, 2009 Nickelback are. fridge buzz

FYI whenever you have something to say in this forum, I'm not going to have a positive response. I intend on challenging everything you say even if I quietly agree with it.

I don't want to be a rock star. In America at least, this involves either being a freak show, or writing banal trite (usually about sex), or both. Nickelback's generic music sucks in my mind, but I do love how Nickelback pulls off their tricks. For the white trash guys, they write hard-hitting misogynist material about strippers and prostitutes. Yet they still woo the white trash women with the sensitive power ballads. That takes a certain kind of chutzpah.
Members 5Ronins Posted December 2, 2009 Members Posted December 2, 2009 I've only ever heard of nickleback from the bands you listed, it's an accomplishement.

Let's start: Lo-fi Tribute to Kaki King is probably the best original song I've heard this year. Primo A-1 stuff. Nickelback's got nothin on you....

And Nickelback are the bad guys...
Members Surrealistic Posted December 2, 2009 Members Posted December 2, 2009 Matximus - you're perfectly entitled to like whoever you like. Personally I don't give "props" to anyone based on the number of records they sell - at least not musical props.
Members Dancebass Posted December 2, 2009 Author Members Posted December 2, 2009 I love it!!! The millions of people that bought Nickelback's last record are white trash in your book. .. Now I'm confused, is white-trash and frat-boy that same thing now?

God forbid you applaud somebody for being successful and making millions of people happy. Egads!!! Eww. How tasteless... All these snob wannabes crying: "But their music is simple and derivative!!!!" It makes me sick...

How tasteless...Hmmm. So you think I HAVE to like them because they make money? I have no problem with Nickelback making money - good luck to them. Do I like them? No. Do I envy them? No. Nothing you or anyone else says can make me do either of the above. Live with it!

Primo A-1 stuff. Nickelback's got nothin on you.... That's cool man, you can compare the jams I made in my GARAGE for no profit for my relatives in Chicago who have never heard me play guitar to multi platinum Nickelback who works with super producers to create generic pop rock songs that "pull at the heartstrings of the working class man and his family." Music that is sooooo sincere and you can hear the drama in every single cheesy power chord riff they use. And of course I have to satisfy the interests of a label and huge fanbase. Because when Grandma hears the tracks I recorded in my basement, she expects hit records and for all of that {censored} to go platinum, otherwise it's useless. Totally futile attempt on my behalf...

How tasteless...All these snob wannabes crying: "But their music is simple and derivative!!!!" It makes me sick... Simple and derivative is fine, I'm not even hating on those guys for their success. Just because they do well doesn't mean that others can't. The problem is with "mainstream" rock as a whole. Bands like Nickelback have always been around and they have their place, remember The Outfield? They happened right in the middle of the 80's surrounded by great music. The problem comes in when the industry itself becomes so unbelievably risk averse that all you get is Nickelback. They are completely sterile, harmless, they pose no threat to parents. Complete total eunuchs. Then people wonder why live music is dropping off? It's pretty clear that 16 year olds would rather take a chance of getting shot in the ass at a Lil' Wayne show than go see a bunch of Dads play "normal rock".

The problem is with "mainstream" rock as a whole. I agree. Just because something is successful or pop sounding does not mean it's bad. Yes, I am a proud music geek, shun mainstream radio and spit in the face of bands like Shinedown and Nickelback. It has nothing to do with their success. If you want to talk success, I'm super hyped on Them Crooked Vultures right now. Their album is amazing and all of those guys are from musical backgrounds much bigger, more epic, and "sell-out" than Nickelback. I hope they sell two million records and they're already rich, but it's good music so I support it. What can I say man? Nickelback is just not my thing, but I refuse to put them on a pedestal because of mere numbers and statistics. In the words of Dickhead Marsalis, "just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good."

Yeah. You opened yourself up to that one with the whole heart on the sleave thing for Grandma. Nickelback rules.

Class act. And Nickelback are the bad guys... Oh, they aren't the bad guys at all. This is capitalism, and I have no hate for popularity (even if I will say if I think music sucks. Well, let's go into detail: great production, middle-of-the-road music, ugly lyrics, and lyrics trump all.) But yeah, the "white trash" segment is one segment that was still selling records. Sorry, Nickelback fans, if you are offended by this characterization. But it's true. Lump Nickelback with Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit and you know what's up (OK, frat boys are in this segment too, but frat boys are white trash with money.) Brie-consuming NPR-loving types just don't buy Nickelback. Hipsters would probably kick you out of their hipster club, at least until it becomes ironically cool to own a Nickelback album. I don't hate popular artists just because they are popular. Let's see... current Billboard artists at the top of the album charts: (1) John Mayer; (2) Andrea Bocelli; (3) Norah Jones; (4) Casting Crowns. Actually, not a bad top 4, America. (Though in a sign of Clear Channel's out-of-touch state, I'm thinking I'd only hear one of these artist on the general radio right now, and that's if I turned into a CCM station).

Members Blackwatch Posted December 4, 2009 Members Posted December 4, 2009 It's not Nickleback's fault that there are a lot of people out there with no taste whatsoever.... But they certainly do not Rule........ Listen to this..... http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=4258547&m=4258548 Every writer of music tends to draw off themselves, others, and certain forms of music, this clip is pretty damming and shows a band that is bending over whole hearted to the label and is giving the fans more of the same thing....and trying to sell it like it's something new.......

"It almost counts as fraud." Yawn.... Give me an effing break. What a loser. Put me in "who cares" camp. Recycling a can't-lose chord progression in pop music is tried and true songwriting formula. Kurt Cobain's "Dumb" and "Smells like Teen Spirit" are virtually the same song. Noel Gallagher's "Wonderwall" and "Do you know what I mean" are the exact same progression too. Hell, Mr. Bob Dylan - probably considered the greatest pop songwriter in our lifetimes - reused the same chords and melodies for a bunch of songs. "Talkin World War III Blues "is the same song as "Talkin New York." "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" on Bringingt it Back is the same song as "Motorpsycho Nitemare" on Another side. Only difference is he has a band behind him and different words... So yeah...Chad's getting unfairly slammed. The greatest writers of the genre have done this.... There's a bunch more examples... Tons and Tons of
