Startup Music Company Looking for Input From Songwriters

To all songwriters, musicians, and bands:

I’d like to hear how you feel about developing yourselves as artists in the current music industry. What do you find difficult about trying to be successful today? What’s easier today than it was years ago? It’s really easy to complain about the “evil” major labels and their policies, but what would you like to see happen to the music industry?

I’m currently performing market research in preparation for a small but full service music publishing/production/marketing/management company called Storyboard Music Group. I need to find how to best market to you, specifically, and determine what services to offer and how to offer them so that you would be willing to choose my company over a larger label if you had the option between the two. Don’t hold back, I really want to hear what it is you find necessary to be able to comfortably and enthusiastically share your craft with the largest audience possible. If you feel like getting in touch with me directly or if you have any questions about my company, please feel free to email me at ben@storyboardmusicgroup.com. Thanks, I look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Hi Ben,

Michael Laskow from TAXI here. Good topic.

It's been my observation over the last 17 years of running TAXI, that most songwriters and artists do what they do because they love doing it. When it comes to promoting themselves, many don't have the time or expertise. Most have day jobs, families, mortgages, etc.

Some DO promote themselves by getting their music on every music related site possible, but they get lost in a sea of thousands of others doing exactly the same thing.

How many acts can we name that have been "discovered" on the Internet, who broke big, sold millions of their products, and got private jet wealthy like the rock stars of yesteryear?

We have all these amazing tools to use for promotion, we have instant worldwide distribution, we can do it all ourselves, yet so few (if ANY) have hit it big without a major label finding them, signing them and building real success.

Are the majors really done? Do we really give all the effort necessary to succeed as independent artists?

Here's a blog piece I wrote a while back that talks about this. See what you think.

What I would like to see change in the music industry?

The creation of an healthier middle-class. Bands and artists that are not stars but still make good money. There are some of them out there, but not enough imo.

I agree with Poker, I'd also like to see indie labels actually try to develop a better and more substantial and sustainable relationship with artists by providing artist development and manage booking, promotions, etc. Be a one-stop shop, so to speak, but yeah.. the indie labels seem to be looking for the next Miley Cyrus. and because of it, ignoring the next Lily Allen or Bob Dylan..

Hell I'd even like to see a new model where labels hire artists as full-time employees and compensate them with salary + commission (for writing/recording successful music), but like poker said.. give artists a sustainable living off their music.

Hey I like this idea!

But I'm not sure most artists would make good business employees...

I think what we need is someone who can handle all business aspects and handle them well. Booking, publishing, merchandising, advertising, etc......

The only problem is, that when someone comes around that is legitimate and could actually help we often dismiss them with the other 95% who are talking out of their collective backsides.

Thanks, everyone! Your input has been really helpful! I'm currently working with an independent film producer so I'm looking to develop methods of exploitation before I offer any opportunities to songwriters/bands so that when I do begin working with artists, I already have potential avenues of exploitation.

Please keep posting, this has been an invaluable resource! If you have specific questions and would like to contact me directly, please do not hesitate by emailing ben@storyboardmusicgroup.com. Thanks again!
