I have to pick out some music for my office...

But I don't know what to go with... I've already burned through the Allman Brothers, Yes, Rush, John Mayall, Burning Spear, Explosions in the Sky (believe it or not, haha), the Bad Plus, the Mercury Program, Brad Mehldav, and a couple others... I've got Jeff Becks "Blow by Blow" that I plan on poppin in soon, but I haven't heard it yet, and even if it's great it won't last long, haha.

Everybody is askin for new tunes and I can't think of something that can be enjoyable and ignorable at the same time. I'm thinkin the Beatles would be pretty good, but after that I'm fresh out of ideas. So far, everybody likes the really "jammy" stuff like Yes, the Allman Brothers, and Rush, so I think I'm gonna keep movin in that direction... Floyd is too spacey I think, I already thought of them.

You guys have any ideas? I'm known as "the music guy" around the office, so I automatically get elected to provide the soundtrack for our working day, haha. I'm tryin to get albums instead of just making playlists too, although that would be a lot easier... What am I forgetting? If I was a morning person, I probably wouldn't be having this much trouble, heh.

edit: Anybody really familar with Santana? I'm not personally, but I know I've heard his older stuff and really been blown away, I'm thinkin that one of Santana's older "jam" albums could be the ticket.

based on that you said they like Rush and Yes (these sure don't sound like MY coworkers btw) I recommend some older Genesis and Pink Floyd from DSOTM on if it was 70's stuff they like. If it's the 80's Yes & Rush they like, then try some Marillion from that same time period (Misplaced Childhood is a GREAT album).

If they like the Jeff Beck, you could also bust out some of Al Dimeola's 70's releases (Casino, e.g.) and maybe some Dixie Dregs.

Check out the first 3 Santana albums...I really like the 3rd.

Also, can't get enough Allman Brothers...from every era

Haha, I grabbed a discography and set everything from the 70's and earlier to download... figured I'd be safe:thu:

Oh, and you're so right on the Allman Brothers... I put on "Eat a Peach" and "Hittin the Note" and would grin every time it came on. The song "Desdemona" drives me absolutely nuts, I love it.

Yeah, I got lucky... It's a cool office. The Rush album is "Grace under pressure" and the Yes albums are "Going for the one" and a best of, so we are kinda all over the place. I actually don't know how the Jeff Beck will go over, I've never heard the album, I just downloaded by recommendation. I have been meaning to check out the Dixie Dregs too, so I'll be all over that.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help:thu:

cannibal corpse

jk ;)

I like the jeff beck suggestion - steely dan compilation - the doors greatest hits - jethro tull's original masters - fleetwod mac's rumors - the eagles greatest hits - floyd's animals or dark side

if they like bands like yes and rush, any of porcupine tree's last three albums might go over well

it would be new and fresh for them all while still staying within the realm of good ol' rock

Burning Spear???

I don't think I could get away with playing Rasta music at work.

You might as well get Peter Tosh "Legalize it" while your at it.
:)

Haha, I have that album as well, but obviously I wouldn't put it on... They didn't mind the Burning Spear, it was a nice change. At the time I had been playing nothing but Jazz like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and the occasional Jobim and Getz combo.

Why merely provide background music when you could blow their minds with someone like the Hellecasters?

Because we don't come here for 8 hours a day to listen to music. Like I mentioned in the first post, I have to find a balance between enjoyability and ignorability. It can't be distracting, and thats the main problem I'm having. If finding "good" music was the only goal, I'd have it covered in spades, haha.

Thanks tho :thu:

You know, if everyone can deal with the Yes/Rush sorta Prog scene, why not try some Kansas? Really, Livgren is the man. Try the leftoverture and point of know return albums, they are great all the way through.

Honest.
:D

I keep thinkin about them too... they really would fit well inbetween Rush and Yes.

Play The Darkness. Followed by a liberal dose of Queen.

Rush is about as heavy as it can get I think... although Queen might be alright on small occasion. The Darkness however, are the punchline of 80's style metal (no small achievement), and will find no home in a music player of mine. :freak:
