illegal downloading - men vs. women?

I wonder what percentage of parents teach their kids that it's wrong?

I keep seeing that anti-pot commercial in my head:

"I learned it from YOU dad, I learned it from you!!!"

Most parents I know are doing it too, and teaching their kids by proxy.

My son torrented a game. I grounded him. I know, all the kids are doing it!

His other friends said blahhh just do it anyway. He later took that further and I got a call from a store he had shoplifted a game when he was shopping with his Mom on visitation weekend. She was stunned he did this while she was right there with him. He had to appear for his mistake and was told "this is not the path I want to see the youth taking" by the judge.

I took his computer and internet priv away for 3 months. During that time, he did extra work, earned allowances and I provided $ in his Steam acct. He can download what he wants on that acct or buy physical media with $. I monitor his acct activity and what is on the PC. He works part time now and has Itunes acct etc but I still pay attention to his activity. He wanted some game that was $75 and I told him to save for it. He did and I ran him up to Gamestop to purchase it.

I can only hope the lesson was learned! Parents have to set the example or the law will do it for them by making an example out of them. I'll note this was some years ago, and I have not seen any wrongful activity on the pc to date. Yes, he still has friends that pirate games and music.

Good for you, man. Parents need to step up to the plate like you did. My kids are almost old enough to start getting into that stuff, and I'm going to be the same way - they're not going to download illegal stuff, regardless of how many other kids are doing it.
