Members grace_slick Posted June 3, 2009 Members Posted June 3, 2009 I’ve got a question… What causes the phenomenon of a song suddenly becoming a hit and being played on the radio 24/7 when it actually came out for the first time several months or years earlier? For example, this Ladyhawke song called My Delirium is now big in Australia, and it was in a movie at some point prior to this. Why did it take this long to get on the radio to this extent? What causes this and what happens during this delay period? Thanks!
Members nuclear arsenal Posted June 3, 2009 Members Posted June 3, 2009 no idea. it's usually a movie or re-release or other big event.
Members grace_slick Posted June 3, 2009 Author Members Posted June 3, 2009 Hmm, I guess so... Another example is this song...I don't know who it's by and don't particularly like it, but it was used as a song on Big Brother about 4 years ago I think, and then last year it was on the radio everywhere. *shrug* Nothing happened with it since Big Brother but it suddenly appeared!
Members Blakemore Effects Posted June 3, 2009 Members Posted June 3, 2009 The first example that pops into mind for me is 1234 by Feist. She was pretty much unheard of in the States before that song was put into an iPod commercial, and after that commercial came out it was in the top 10 iTunes downloads, I think. I'd assume that's what happens a lot of the time. Song is released as a single, then it makes it into a movie, commercial, TV show, etc. and people start downloading the song.
Members Kramerguy Posted June 4, 2009 Members Posted June 4, 2009 It's everything about exposure - right place at the right time, Fiest is the perfect example. Someone important saw or heard her 1234 song, loved it, promo'd it to Apple or AT&T, and bam... major exposure, then it became a big hit on it's own. Had it not had the merit, it would have fallen to the wayside like 90% of the other songs in commercials.
Members Grubgoat Posted June 4, 2009 Members Posted June 4, 2009 I remember hearing "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down more than a year before they "hit", I think it was on KSHE-95 in St. Louis. I can only imagine that it has to do with them being out there, PUSHING themselves and their music for that whole time (and more), putting on a great enough show that many people were enthused by them, so the record company put more money into pushing the song... But I imagine there are MANY ways to do it. Like the man says, right place, right time...
