I was wondering lets say a solo artist hires musicians to be their backing band for a tour. I was curious if anyone new how this works? What the pay scale is, if they need to be in some type of musicians union to get union scale, things of that nature. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

It depends on a lot of things-how much you're making, what the expenses are and at what level you're performing. Hired guns doing the Joe's Rib Rack and the Past Time Tavern circuit aren't going to expect as much as guys doing the festival, theater and coliseum tours.

When I had my own band, I guaranteed my guys 100 bucks a guy a night plus rooms and travel, and if the gig paid more than $800.00, we all made more. Some shows they'd make $225 or more each.

If I was doing a large concert/festival tour, I'd say they should be paid $200-300 each a night w/ travel expenses covered.
