It kinda goes without saying ...Steve Cropper.

Some might know Cornell Dupree.

Of course, most of these players in this style are heavy rhythm masters ... so they sometimes get a bit overlooked by the idolaters of finger wigglers. ;)

Whaddya know?

Jimmy Nolen and Catfish Collins, who between them played most of the great 60s/early 70S James Brown funk rhythm guitar parts.

And Nile Rodgers, who picked up the gauntlet and laid down the hippest chops with Chic.

Just one more name: Bobby ... WOMACK.

Yer! Those guys and the others (Curtis, Womack, etc.) really bring the soul. I love playing that stuff.

Let's not leave out Reggie Young.

I think Pops Staples sort of finds his way into this group albeit from a gospel/bluesy angle.

Cliff White--played on almost everything Sam Cooke did.

Robert Hunter, Joe Messina, Eddie Willis--the Motown guitar players.

...and let's not forget the man who said: "A lot of cats can play lead, but the real important thing is the rhythm"--Jimi Allen Hendrix!

I vote for two guys plus two more guys:

1) The guitarist for Clarence Carter on "Slip Away"

2) The guitarist for Aretha Franklin on "Chain of Fools"

and the two more guys:

SAM & DAVE, all their songs, but especially "Soul Man" and "I Thank You"

Is Jimi Allen Hendrix any relation to James Marshall Hendrix?:p

How about Ernie Isley?

Lou-Dog, that's Freddie Stone (I just looked over Red Ant's list, and he listed him, actually).

Who was the other Muscle Shoals guitarist? We've got Duane and Jimmy Johnson, but there was a third who isn't popping into my head, at the moment.
