Members //()() Posted February 12, 2009 Members Posted February 12, 2009 Okay,I'm already a writer with ASCAP, and I'd like to register as a music publishing company also. My dilemma: I hear that you can't use the same Tax ID you use on your writer form (my SSN), so I'd need a business ID of some sort. That's no problem, I wanted to register it as a business anyway. This is where I get lost -- ASCAP denies any publishing name that may be similar to another one to avoid confusion. I obviously don't want to register my business only to find out that ASCAP denies that name. Is there anyway I can find out if my name meets ASCAP's standards as far as not being too similar to another one? P.S. I am looking to sign publishing contracts with other songwriters. This isn't just for my songs.
Moderators daddymack Posted February 12, 2009 Moderators Posted February 12, 2009 good question...I would ask ASCAP...rather than here, though.

Members mmmiddle Posted February 17, 2009 Members Posted February 17, 2009 Check out All You Need to Know About the Music Business. I remember reading the answer there. I think you're able to submit the request to ASCAP before you actually register the publishing company name with the state. Sorry I don't remember the specifics off the top of my head.
