Favorite Tour Van

One of the other threads talked about buying a tour van. I thought I'd be fun to list a favorite from the past, or the one you wished for.

For years I had a 1969 Chevy Step Van. Like a Bread Truck. The doors rolled back, the front seats were like siting on a bar stool. It had a V-8, dual exhaust, dual wheels in the back, roll up back door. I moved the bulk head that was behind the seat back far enough to fit a bench seat from a school bus behind the front seats. Boom box crammed on top of the dashboard. Whole band plus Gear and luggage went in it. That truck was awesome! Got about 10 MPG, would Cruise at 80 on the high way. A Lot of good times were had traveling in that old truck. I still miss it. Its now a wheel-less tool shed on my cousin's farm.

These days I pull a trailer behind a Pick-up. BORING! I always wanted one of those Old Blue Birds, restored. I think they get about 6MPG on diesel.

My old band from 1989-1990 didn't have a tour van, but we had an old school bus we converted into a 'tour bus' of sorts.

We modified it so that there was a wall made of wood that divided the bus in half. We stored all of the equipment in the back compartment. You could access it either from the rear door or the small door we cut in front. In front, we rearranged the seats so that they faced each other along the walls. When we wanted to sleep, we had a big sheet of plywood we fit under the seats so we could all (sort of) get some rest on top of the board (with some blankets and pillows) during the long road trips.

The funniest part about it was that we had it colored purple, so it looked very striking whenever we came into town. The "Purple People Eater" we called it. We were originally going to color it Fire Engine Red, but I think it was either illegal to use that color if it wasn't a government vehicle or it was just way too expensive.

These were the days where I was so green and naive, I thought for sure we were going to make the big time soon and I would be famous. Didn't quite happen that way. So, it's kind of a funny yet melancholy memory to look back upon.

Primarily down by the river, I assume?

haha yeah.

one of my bands is called living in vans.

we all wear the shoe brand vans.

and the name worked out well for us.

we ended up playing alot of skateboard/snowboard national events.

now that i think about it.

when we played on the danny kass grenade strikes back/monster energy national snowboard tour. Monster provided us with winebago that was spraybombed black and neon green.

it was alot of fun haha.:thu:

Wow! Way cool. Is it Diesel? Mileage? I always wondered how big the basements were in those.

Man! That is so awesome! I couldn't imagine owning something like that. Does your Music pay that well, or do you have a great day job to go along with your music?

I wish we had a TV in the truck. All we have is, a radio in the dash, and lately movies on a lap top, and no the Old Guys don't watch porno on it! Really! If we had a 42" Plasma TV in an 8' 6" x 40', and a bathroom with 150 gal of water, we might.

The venues pay enough for the travel expenses, fuel and maintenance on the bus above player pay. We cook our own meals and sleep on board the bus.

I am self employed engineer, so I do make good money but I also can get away to tour with the band.

87 Ford Econoline tricked by Sand Vans Customs.

Her name is "Tuffy". She is still running but needs a little TLC.

She changes her own oil, so that's a plus. :p

We are afraid to wash her, for fear that the funk and gunk may be what's holding her together.

I think I just wrote a song.
