Members Priceless Posted January 5, 2009 Members Posted January 5, 2009 Hello im a new artist in the Houston area and vs look for a deal I would rather start an indie label and push my own music my way. Now I was told all I needed was a dba in order to start the company but after calling legalzoom.com I think I need more. I was told that I have to get publishing and things copy written being honest im new to this so someone please tell me what I need 2 be able 2 sale my own music under my own label. Thanks in advance please email me at Demarcowms@tmail.com
Members ermghoti II Posted January 5, 2009 Members Posted January 5, 2009 Why on earth do you think you need a vanity label to sell music? Nothing will give you any access to distribution that you don't have right now, and distribution is generally what a small indie label offers over a self-release. Just get everything copyrighted, and sell discs and downloads online and at shows. Pretending that you're a label is pointless.
Members primeelite Posted January 5, 2009 Members Posted January 5, 2009 Get an LLC through legal-zoom and from there use TuneCore for digital distribution and physical distribution should be regional and online for a small indie label. You should get all of your stuff copy written once it is done and ready for distribution but as far as publishing you don't need to start a separate publishing company under another LLC and the whole deal. Just really get an LLC for $200-300 and it should be enough for you to sell your own music. Or if you don't expect to sell a lot of copies and are going to be dealing with just yourself at low volume then just don't go through the whole thing and just go about it by yourself. What I said above is if you are going to be starting a legitimate indie record label.

Members primeelite Posted January 5, 2009 Members Posted January 5, 2009 Yeah it is hard from the information you gave to really give you detailed advice but if it is nothing large and you do not expect to sell a lot of product then just do the paypal link and upload it to your website like said above. This will be better for your bottom line and if you start selling some product then next album set up a legal label and try to expand upon it. No sense in starting off with all kinds of unneeded regulations and expenses that would be brought forth by making your business legal.
