Getting an instrumental demo around, looking for a singer.

Our band is finishing a demo of a few tracks we've laid down, but with no vocals. We're looking for a singer. What are some effective ways we could pass these around the scene? Go to shows and ask some bands if they know anyone? How do we protect our music to prevent someone from taking it and using the songs as their own without our credit or permission? Thanks.

there's a band around here that's also looking for a singer. what they did was book a couple of shows and play their songs w/o a singer, then ask the crowd they're looking for one and if any is interested. they even passed out flyers saying they're looking for a singer.

 

don't know if it works or not, but i thought it was interesting... and you have to give them credit for trying.

 

another route (which i'm sure you already explored) is to go to craig's list and myspace classifieds.

 

as far as your music being protected, there's a thread around here that talks about copyright.

You could. It wouldn't hurt. But I'd take a lot of other steps too-hit up some college music departments and post notices and ask around there. Put notices up at music stores. Criags list. Myspace. Etc etc. Mine every available resource. You never know where the right person will come from. Often it's from where you least expect.

You don't. Your stuff is copyrighted the minute it's placed in tangible form but that doesn't prevent anyone from taking it as their own. For that matter neither does copyright registering. But at least registering your work gives you legal standing should you decide to bring a lawsuit for infringement.

School starts up Monday, so I'll definitely pass by the school of music here on campus and other parts of the school, and maybe go to the other nearby university. The whole playing live without a singer is intriguing as well...
