Epiphone Casino clone?

I have a growing fascination with cheap (price, not quality) copies lately. That's partly because I'm broke, and partly because I like tinkering with guitars more than I like actually playing them. Anyway, You can find a hundred knock-offs of strats, teles, LPs, SGs, ESs, but the one guitar on my wish list that I haven't seen anywhere is a Casino copy. Does anyone know of a budget model semi-hollow with P90s? or, dare I say it, a semi-hollow with p90s and a Bigsby?

So far my only idea is to buy an Epi Dot or Ibanez AS73 and put H-sized P90s in it, but that's not exactly the same thing.

post links & pics if you have them,

Thanks

The Oscar Schmidt OE-30 looks alot like the revolution-era casino.

Here are some pics of mine (I've put in bucker sized p90s since I took this pic)

The tailpiece was only 10 bucks from guitar fetish. It's of great quality and only took 10 minutes to install.

Really? ...

...I'll be damned, it is!

Ok then, does anyone know of a thin hollow or semi-hollow with P90s & a Bigsby?

Semihollows with P90s aren't your everyday guitar but they should be!

I went as far as buying an Ibanez and adapting a set of SD P90s on it... meh. I have a Sheraton now and I got a set of BG Pure 90s for it. True P90 pickups in a humbucker sized package. NO need to adapt anything, just drop them in.

The tone is incredible and it's my number 1 guitar.

Now, I'd love to try the new SD P-Rails but on another guitar... my Sheraton stays exactly as it is!

Why?

By the time you would pay $150-200 for a clone, then pay a couple of hundred more to upgrade it you're probably getting to about $400. You can get a used Casino for that.

You know, a perfectly reasonable point. listen to this man.

That Gretsch is actually $30 more than the street price of a new Casino. It looks good, though.

I think the original poster might be SOL. The best option is probably holding out for a used Casino.

Just 'cuz I like showing it off, here's mine:

I just picked up a used 2001 black/chrome Casino for $350 with a hard case. Its taken years of contemplating and hunting for the right foundation to build one at a cost effective base until I found that used one, identical to what I wanted to build, for less than the cost of building it.

If your after a 335 clone however, thats a different story.

That Hamer really is sweet...and it damn well better be for $4700!

In any case, the original question was "does anyone know of a budget model semi-hollow (or thin hollow) with p90?" And the answer is clearly...no

I'll just keep one eye on ebay and wait for that $3-400 used Casino to pop up.

You should really check out the BG pup option too.

They sound exactly like P90s. I bought the Pure 90s but Bryan has another model too.

As a cheaper option, GFS's Mean 90s sound terrific in semihollows too.

There are many very playable 335 clones on the market today. I'm partial to my Sheraton but there are many other affordable options.

You might want to watch for a used Yamaha AEX 502. They are thin, semi hollows with P90s. I think you can find them for a couple hundred dollars. I have the AEX 520 (the version with mini humbuckers) and it's pretty nice. It gets pretty close to the Casino sound intself.

How about the Hamer Newport? So, they have a spruce top where the Casino is maple, but still, it's one hell of an axe

Nice! For the price of one of those, you could get a US-made John Lennon Casino AND probably get two or three additional guitars as well.

One of the best results I have seen with this conundrum was a friend of mine getting an Ibanez AS73 and putting a set of Lindy Fralin P92s in it. It was a great looking guitar with great action and a HUGE P90-style sound

That actually sounds like reasonable advice!
