Wii Music Part Two

We got our kids (8 and 10) Wii Music for Christmas. In a previous thread I'd been speculating about it, as well as picked on Guitar Hero a bit. After playing it with them, for real, a few observations.

Wii music seems to be definitely aimed at the young audience (elementary school age) and yet like most Wii games, it's also somewhat fun for adults. The harder and/or faster you play, the more the computer improvises the "notes" you're playing. It sort of DOES feel like playing an instrument... almost... it feels a lot like playing one hand of an instrument while someone else plays the other. It's more similar to playing an instrument than Guitar Hero is. But most teens wouldn't want to play it, at least at first, because it's basically children's music. As you get better, more songs are unlocked.

You can pull up notes that show you when to play and there are "games" which improve your timing and other things.

I really like Wii Music as a music "game" for elementary age children. I could see it being used in elementary music classrooms. You can improvise on each instrument and if you get off time too much, you'll hit notes that are borderline wrong... not atonal wrong, but just seem out of place. The better your rhythm is, the better your improvs will sound. Or you can just "play" the melody.

For adults? Naw. It's a very fun thing to do with your young kids, but it's not going to win older fans, unless I'm totally wrong, which certainly does happen from time to time. To time.

But I give props to Nintendo. It seems like they had some music teachers consult on this project. Especially with very young elementary kids, I see this program as being fun and educational.
