Some of the ioffer sellers seem to be claiming legitimacy because they're upfront about the instruments being fakes. This one has the two screw truss rod cover. Presumably it's a real photo of the copy if it says "Gibsun". In another listing there was a hilarious exchange between the seller and an incensed owner of a real Gibson whose photos the seller had nicked. US$200 incl. p&p from China. The seller even admits its a fake. Looking at the Gibson site, only the HD-6x Pro Digital (!) has a headstock and truss rod cover approximating the fake above, but the tuners are way different. I hadn't heard of this before, but as the name suggests, it's from coconut and date palms. I have a vague suspicion that it might not be a tonewood to rival mahogany. The seller claims that s/he can supply different types of guitar if the buyer provides a photograph. What would happen if we GIMP'd up a photo of a guitar that never existed, and send it? I found another review where someone bought a chinese fake. They said that it looked brilliant, but played awful. They were looking for better pickups to get that Gibson sound, as they said that on an electric guitar the tonewood was near irrelevant as far as sound was concerned. You should know it's fake even before looking at any details on the headstock at all if that's the case. That one looks wrong on many levels...the shape is pretty near, like someone said..that's like a Supreme's truss rod cover, and yeah it's got 2 screws.....Diamond looks wrong..too small...bot lined up propperly...doesn't look pearly enough..... Members FrankJKennedy Posted January 8, 2021 Members Share Posted January 8, 2021 Hi Ive noticed this what these Chinese do is use the les paul 'custom' label on the cover of the truss rod to cover their indiscretions.To ensure its gen, it should be advertised as a genuine Gibson, or as a copy and it will be that. B stock also maybe used by Chinese or Gibson. As are custom, for custom shop etc. These bd's are darned clever. BUT offer a home guitarist a reasonable cheap copy of the grossly inflated price Gibson charge. You might have to pay uk duty on it, this is token, and largely due to vat! on zero cost?? there might be ie poor action or if sg Vintage (Though i have to say the best British made ones) make, not actually 50 years old, a cheap vibrolla fitted you have to bend the plate in or out in a vice, to get the strings bridge angle right. The vib has to be lower than the bridge. Decals can be got, should not be plastic, pearl or mother of pearl, its mother of pearl from abalone shells. And the markings on fretboard should be set squarely to it, and be even to both edges. not at sickening angles. If its from China you might have to pay attention to the finish. The nut, STUCK ON WITH SUPERGLUE RATHER THAN instrument or FISH GLUE, over the glaze of nitro cellulose, the bridge saddles, and the treble-mid-bass switch and the lead connection including replacements. And set up. It might also have pau-ferro fret board but be sold as ebony. The tuners, Locking Grovers are not genuine but may be stylized like them and possibly not too bad. I note no maple fretboard sold. The finish is not deep enough. The pick ups maybe cheaper, should have wilkinsons on there though this could be copied only way to tell us if Q value is stated - it should be. If no electrical safety certificate, then beware if using with an unearthed mic system. Also the body is not as genuine it will be over-routed, there will be white powder residue inside so possibly box wood or too high a speed used to make the cavities, and no vaccum extraction used. (Not coke or prep H though nothing to say that.). Also Gibsun apparent from the stylised open o, Not to say Gibsons or Strats are that good, as many are made in Mexico, under licence, or not, they might be merely polished in the kalamazoo factory next door in California/(New Mexico). No tant bead or Orange drop capacitors only 1 range of pots used for all three pickups, you dont get the option of switchable burstbuckers or singlewound, no mention of reverse or other effects - fit your own preamp and midi system. If you want to try others its more expense and might not work. At end of the day remember, its only a guitar... You pays for what you gets applies, and caveat emptor definitely, or buyer beware. If your prepared to lay out c. 300 to 450 quid plus import duty and possibly delivery and cover the improvements, you might get yourself a reasonable guitar. Don't think of selling it, as genuine, in the U.K. though please or the blue moodies'll be after you. Dont alter the truss rod label to standard if it says custom and get it checked electrically. It will though be impossible to set up if you alter the bridge or saddles at all though perhaps Im not that patient. I rattle on about Chinese imports as you do, but many others including the PRS se24 from a Spanish person sounding name, maybe a business not an individual, from Isle of White at least they gave me a good padded gig bag. Still a damaged guitar but as stated - possibly them, boyos, in the post. You can always send it back if bought with credit card or paypal /ebay, on the surface of it at least. Get a return to base cert first though. Theyre all into it mate, possibly ever since the first lyre was sold to fred flintstone... Thanks Frank Kennedy.
