Members jerry_picker Posted October 28, 2008 Members Posted October 28, 2008 So, I discovered a 2-man act busking . Undiscovered, unsigned, all original, super talented (think Black Keys). They have a "manager" who gets them small house party gigs and finds them street corners to busk on while she burns CDs on a laptop to sell to passersby for 5 bucks. I have some loose change $$$ and was thinking of picking them up, getting them into better sound gear, producing a professional demo CD, and promoting them into legitimate higher-exposure venues. Except...I don't know the first fecking thing about this business! How do I get schooled?
Moderators daddymack Posted October 28, 2008 Moderators Posted October 28, 2008 start by reading the stickies...and some of the other threads here...there is a wealth of info on what to do, and what not to do...then...go out and screw up! Nothing teaches you faster than making your own mistakes! oh, and jp, it was nice of you to stop by...not too many of the old-timers are willing to admit they don't know everything
Members primeelite Posted October 28, 2008 Members Posted October 28, 2008 Should read a book called This Business of Artist Management. It has some good tips in it but like many other jobs it changes daily. Most of being a manager is a mix of babysitter, psychiatrist, and a little bit of business man.
Members jerry_picker Posted October 28, 2008 Author Members Posted October 28, 2008 Thanks. I am old enough to be happy to admit what I don't know. I do know talent and originality when I see it, and it is fairly rare that something stands head and shoulders above.
