Members jemmus
Google search has failed, but I know somebody here will have this information. Who played guitar on Isaac Hayes's "Shaft" Soundtrack? Specifically, on the jazz-ish instrumental "Cafe Reggio", and of course on the wah-monster "Theme from 'Shaft'"? Happy 2009 m8s! Members Norcal_GIT_r
I'm pretty sure it was Tommy Tedesco.
Members harold heckuba
If you get that Stax Records DVD, it has quite a bit about that. I think Tedesco is correct, however I cant recall for certain.

I hope I'm remembering correctly.
Members jemmus
There's a video on Youtube showing Isaac Hayes in the studio recording "Cafe Reggio" from the "Shaft" soundtrack. During that session at least, the guitar parts are played by a couple of African-American guys. Sounds like Tedesco did "Theme from 'Shaft'" and these guys did "Cafe Reggio". I'll do some digging on them and report back if I find anything.

Members Alex_SF
Nice find, CSM. Hayes came off in interviews like a genuinely decent guy. I downloaded the podcast version of his NPR "Fresh Air" interview shortly after his death, and it was very entertaining and amusing, including some insights into "Theme from Shaft." The video clip referred to on Youtube is Issac Hayes with his band playing Cafe Reggio. There are two guitarist in that clip, Charles Pitts being one of them. Members Brother Chris Clermont
The late Charles "Skip" Pitts played the wah guitar on "Theme from 'Shaft.'" Michael Toles plays the melody on "Café Regio's." Tommy Todesco does not play on the movie theme at all as Isaac Hayes recorded the rhythm section in Memphis with Willie Hall (drums), James Alexander (bass), Lester Snell (electric piano), Gary Jones (percussion), plus Pitts and Toles on guitars. Only the strings and horns were recorded in Los Angeles. Horn solos were also recorded in Memphis by Memphis musicians as well. Hayes felt the L.A. players' groove was too clinical and didn't have the grease he was looking for.
