Members Songwriter81 Posted October 3, 2008 Members Posted October 3, 2008 If you find yourself selling a reasonable amount of cd's, what percentage are from people who have attended one of your gigs?
Members cherri Posted October 3, 2008 Members Posted October 3, 2008 Our sales break down like this: 1. Sales at shows - physical CDs - probably 1/3 of our sales.2. Local consignments - physical CDs3. Folks who hear us on the radio - both physical CDs and digital downloads4. Folks who find us online - some physical CDs, mostly digital downloads
Moderators daddymack Posted October 4, 2008 Moderators Posted October 4, 2008 I would have to say 99.9%
Members richardmac Posted October 4, 2008 Members Posted October 4, 2008 80% of my CD's are sold at shows. 20% are sold online. I expect that to change to 90% in the future. Online I'm one guy in a billion. At a gig, I'm the ONLY guy there selling CD's. Unless I'm sharing the stage, of course.
Members CLOCK13 Posted October 6, 2008 Members Posted October 6, 2008 Someone could start a free cd in the mail campaign for publicity. Just mail all your music to people for free in the mail. You could be known as the nice guy musicians.

Why not just e-mail people a link to your music with a password so they can download it for free? Why pay the snail mail rate to give something away? And why produce CDs which is a dying format?

Members bostonwal Posted October 12, 2008 Members Posted October 12, 2008 And why produce CDs which is a dying format? True, but it's far from dead actually. The vast majority of sales is still CDs and will probably continue to be for another couple of years. That's a long time in musician/band years. Plus I think CDs help to foster a stronger connection between the band and the early fans that want to experience everything they can about a new band. These sorts of fans are often the tastemakers of their social group and might direct more fans your way.
