Things aren't always what they seem though. Our taxes are generally lower, but we pay a lot for other things, that some countries heavily subsidize. The University I work at will cost you north of $200,000 for 4 years, without scholarships (65% of the students do get aid, but still). Yeah, other things seem to be cheaper in America though. . I know it must vary a lot but how does the scholarship scheme function? Can it be means-tested? Or is more about academic merit? I know you have weird sports scholarships too but I assume they're pretty rare. The system has recently changed in the UK and is probably going to evolve a lot in the future but most graduates would leave university with about $20,000-$30,000 worth of (interest free, state provided) loans. We actually have a lot of American students in my department, they pay three or four times as much as EU nationals but its still cheaper for them to study here (apparently)!
