  1. i'd say 95+% of people who listen to music aren't recording engineers or even musicians and they lack that anal perception. your average joe or susie who runs on her treadmill every morning with kelly clarkson blasting on her ipod doesn't give a {censored} about compression. the music sounds good and serves its purpose. we all like different music/records for different reasons. and there isn't any right or wrong way to do it. that's what art is about and not all of it appeals to everyone. if 10,000 different flanging reverberating chorusing effects aid the artist in expressing their vision for what their music should be, then that's great. elliot smith for example used all kinds of vocal stacking and chorusing effects and it wouldn't be the same any other way. that was him. my 3 cents.
