I started playing at age 16 but the guitar was impossible. In 1970 at age 20 I bought a 69 Martin D-28 after playing about a dozen different D-28s in different shops. Every one sounded a little different. I ended up in a shop 60 miles from where I lived had one that jumped out at me. Louder and full of booming Martin presence and harmonics that rang forever. I went home, sat in front of a turn table and learned Ian Anderson's acousitc guitar work by moving the needle back over and over until I heard every note. Things like "Mother Goose" and about 10 minutes worth of "Thick as a Brick", "A New Day Yesterday" and "My God". Then put on the first CSN album. When I started gigging I was offended by people that said my voice sounded like Neil Young's. So I studied music, learned how to sing and sang in every choir and chamber/modern classicle/jazz I could get in and developed my own voice. Even had an 8 voice Acapella group of my own where we all contributed our own arraignments. A major failure in my life was not holding onto that D-28. It was what inspired me for 15 years. I needed money to keep from getting evicted and it had become harder and harder to play. I couldn't afford the neck reset. But damn, I miss it's overpowering sound. I loved it but will never again own a guitar without a truss rod. I now have a 2002 Taylor 814 CE and a Ovation Custom Legend from about 200. The Taylor has that rosewood box roundness to the sound but the Ovation plays better and dressed through my old Ibanez acoustic multi pedal with it's STEREO chorus it to can sound awesome .
