  1. Guitars is guitars is guitars. Some is {censored}, some is fab, and some sits in the middle. Dont matter what is writ on the top, a Squier can be the nutz, and a Gibson can be a steaming pile of poop. It's human nature to defend our lifestyle choices....even though we is often deluded.... W3rd. The piece of wood, pickups and overall playability are more important than the name on the headstock...
  2. I think distortion and fuzz are crutches for most of the guitarists on this forum. I love compression on a clean electric tone, and it has nothing to do with any inadequacies in my playing. It's the way I like a guitar to sound.+1 a good compressor can bring out the nuances of your playing. I only use a comp w/ clean tones and it definitely adds some sheen/sustain- I'm not into huge squash though. I agree that a lot of people simply don't understand/know how to use it correctly.
  3. I had one of the guvnor's for a while. While I liked it at first, it quickly fell out of favor. It doesn't have much of a dynamic sound and the tone sounds very sterile. Your first impression will be "Wow I'm playing through a marshall stack!" but once thats gone you really notice it's shortcomings. These were exactly my impressions as well.
  4. I mostly use the Crunch channel of my XXX, which is supposed to be modeled on a modded Marshall (stop snickering). Guv'nor might be superfluous. Rat's are supposed to be Marshally, but then they aren't actually made by Marshall...Rats have some Marshall character, but they also have a very distinctive vibe that is uniquely their own. The Guv'nor sounds just like what it is- a pedal trying to emulate Marshalls to a tee and succeeding to some degree, but not completely. I say get the Rat and be done w/ it
  5. I had the Guv'nor 2+ and also have a Rat 2 (w/ LM308). The Guv'nor was a pretty good sounding versatile distortion and the deep switch was a very cool feature, but the Rat flat out sounds better to me w/ more sustain and character (probably better highs as well). I'd say Guv'nor for tweakability (has eq, deep knob) and Rat for tone. I also have a BBII that I use in clean boost mode to drive my Palomino and it works great and adds a little color- also has a pretty nice Blues mode.
  6. They're Alnico V pickups. Keep them in there long enough to learn to appreciate them. I changed the tuners cuz I think the green looks stupid. Other than that, a great guitar. And in your case, a great price! Looks great in the MF SG case for $39 too. Yes- very nice stock pups. I picked up one of the $199 goldtops- lotta guitar for the $$
  7. I use the AD15 Vox for practice and it's perfect...
