  1. I had a cup of coffee way too late in the evening, got nostalgic, and figured I'd check in. It has to have been a year, at least...
  2. You mean people like Soros, Gates and Buffett who have more at their disposal than most corporations ever could come up with for this purpose? It's also kind of unfair that those people have more influence than my union buddy down the block. There are exceptions to every rule; I apologize for speaking in absolutes.
  3. Many citizens have much more money than many corporations. Is it ethical to let citizens spend as much as they please when their interests compete with those of corporations who up until now could not spend? Perhaps not, but what about corporations who have a much greater amount of money than any private citizen (or organization) could ever hope to hold? The principle behind the decision today is that the First Amendment does not permit a distinctions to be made based upon the identity of the speaker. It's all about the "marketplace of ideas": the more speech that is introduced, the better. I can agree with this in principle, but when some speakers have the financial ability to introduce a disproportionately large amount of speech in pursuit of their own self-interest, even when that self-interest hurts the citizenry at large, are we better off as a result of that speech? If that speech causes a candidate to be elected who will act for the needs of the few (i.e., the corporation) are his or her constituents better off, or is the notion of representative government failing?
  4. I'm not sure what you mean by 'other entities'. Do you mean it's shareholders? Other corporations? Other businesses? Individuals? Mostly citizens, landowners, the environment, regulatory bodies...
  5. Corporations have stakes in the outcome of elections just like average citizens do. They also have a duty to their shareholders to do what is best for the corporation. Shouldn't they be allowed to project their message? Often, the best interests of a corporation are mutually exclusive to the best interests of numerous other entities. If the political result of their message enables them to act in spite of this fact, is the result ethical?
  6. The only minor inconvenience is your postings aren't very good rebuttals. It's kind of a tough read. Irony, thy sword is sharp... Considering that the quote in question is a quote from a Supreme Court decision, it's in the public domain. I do agree that we will almost certainly see more campaign advertising as a result of this decision. My concern is not so much with the quantity of said advertising as the agenda of those who are underwriting it.
  7. Probably because quoting too much of it is violates intellectual copyrights. At least there's a famous mod on this forum who inspires for us not to do it. Or it dilutes the point you're trying to make, but that's only a minor inconvenience, eh? :poke: I'm with zachoff on this one. While it doesn't allow candidates to accept direct contributions from corporations, it still gives corporations the ability to disproportionately influence political campaigns, which is unsettling.
  8. One last (?) post before everything goes away...
  9. My cat has a very large swelling in his left neck. Apparently my wife noticed this in September. She tried and failed to get to the vet in Berlin. (Wimminz and geography. ) He's going to the vet today, in Romania. Seems otherwise happy and active, but this feels like one walnut-size gland problem. Good vibes your way. We had something similar happen with one of our cats, and it didn't end well.
  10. The thought of that kind of {censored} would terrify me in school, such that I never missed an exam. Do you have a way to make up the exam? It terrifies the {censored} out of me as well, but apparently not enough so to motivate me. I sent the instructor an email, but my hopes are not high.
  11. Alarm didn't go off this morning, so I not only slept through my computer science final, but I didn't get up until 10PM. I am now extremely well rested and have nothing to do but be extremely frustrated at myself.
