Like already said, it depends greatly on the source you're recording. At this moment my get to go mic is AKG C4000b. I know many hates but it works for me. Actually I think it's really close to doublepriced C414-series.

I've been going through the same thing. No matter many I've come up with, all are somewhat taken at least in some business form. Sorry that I can't help more with this... just look around and the name will come by itself eventually.

There are many but one that came into my mind instantly is that Alter Bridge's One Day Remains is mastered is mastered too loud... it ruined the overall sound and there's audible distortion. This is actually really common problem nowadays.
