  1. RE singing on pitch I'm not a natural, to say the least. But some are and don't need to work at it. I'm good at hearing a part and cue'ing someone in but singing's just not my thing, a long time ago I decided the local music scene didn't need one more crappy singer so I leave that to others. It's a treat to be in a band with good harmonies though. One oldies band I play with does a great job on Poco songs. I fully empathize with being frustrated with a band and struggling to be tactful with suggestions. I have to open my mouth when they butcher chords because "aww that's good enough" or "no one will know the difference". Not a fan of redneck reharms of David Alan Coe songs! lol. It's also hard to keep quiet when someone repeatedly has trouble with the timing of something, when they could fix it just by playing along with the record on their own time, practicing with a click, or just learning how to count. Another bone of contention is when other guys have different ideas of what constitutes a groove. Not in the ranting mood right now but oftentimes I can rant on and on (maybe there needs to be a seperate rant forum?lol) I try to remember I have issues of my own that others are nice enough to work around, being hard-of-hearing. I also empathize with being conscious of who you're associated with. If it gets to be too much there's always the solo option, as a way to tread water until you can find a band situation you're happy with. What I like about playing solo is, if the music sucks you know it's your own fault and you have total control over making it not suck. But there's nothing like playing with a good band. It's safe to assume that everyone that posts on a Backstage with the Band forum, feels the same way.
  2. I agree. Also, I've been here almost as long as you. At about the same time I started lurking KC, didn't sign up there until 2018.
  3. Yes it is, plenty of bickering, trolling and immaturity on display. Which is almost nostalgia because that reminds me of the old HC.
  4. My weekly gig fizzled out, American Legion crowd just got smaller and smaller til it wasn't feasable to keep it going. NYE cancelled. No biggie, I don't blame an older crowd for being careful. And I don't feel entitled to a living playing music- been pursuing daytime "gigs" as it is not possible for me to survive sitting at home. More power to those that can do that. As far as gigs go it was a pretty safe one, big stage and a cavernous building. Even before the pandemic it was possible to have 10-20' between couples. I have 2 gigs booked in January with my old band, filling in for members who don't feel safe gigging. The stages are fine, space-wise, but the people out front don't always practice proper social distancing, unfortunately.
  5. And tell them to bring some commas periods maybe even some exclamation and question marks we're running a little low around here
  6. Last weekend I happened to run into a former BSWB active poster, who asked about this place and told me several of the posters had migrated to coverband central. I believe he said it was a FB group.
  7. I'm the one who showed up at your gig in Jackson MS and yelled out HARMONY CENTRAL.
  8. love it! Had been hearing about the Time Jumpers but hadn't yet checked them out.
  9. Anyone that only associates accordian with Lawrence Welk just lives too far from Lousiana- or South TX. I subbed in the band of a country Cajun star for a few shows, found out that an accordion (in that case a Cajun button accordion) run into a big sound system is a massive-sounding beast. And the music has a drive all it's own. The artist moved to LA in the late 80's and attracted quite a bit of curiosity and attention, even recruited Albert Lee on guitar and jammed with David Sanborn on the Night Music TV show. Accordians haven't taken over the world, but I think they have at least lost some of their stigma.
  10. I wonder if a Yamaha MDF2 (MIDI data filer) would also work? I have one. I think it's the Yamaha version of the Alesis data disk so it should.
