  1. I'm one that really needs to buckle down and study theory more. I've been involved with music my whole life, but I think there are big gaps in my knowledge as some of it still seems magical and mysterious. Particularly when you get to 4 tone chords. It all becomes very relative and tricky to figure out what chord you are looking at... Then I get further confused by the whole sus 2nd, add 2nd, or add 9. chord substitutions, passing tones the 'five of the five' etc.... My brain hurts... I'm going to go lie down now ... that is all
  2. By the way.. The link doesn't work. Definatly research the company as much as you can before spending the $$$
  3. Compression (unless used in the extreme) should not be very noticible.
  4. I was listening to Sgt. Pepper's recently a little more critically. Is it just me or is that mix just plain weird??? Vocals or instruments panned hard left or right etc. What is he doing??? And how does it come out sounding so good with such a wierd mix? I just cant seem to make any logical sense of that album. From everything I read here and other places, things Martin does on that album are just plain wrong.... But damned if it doesn't sound great.... Within you Without you is just jaw dropping. Lots of tricky instruments recorded and mixed to perfection. But I digress.. Well, since I wondered off, here's another off topic point.... Seeing the word's, "Digitally Remastered" on any classic album just makes me twitch.
  5. The correct answer to the mac or pc question is..... Yes.
  6. 1. Politically Correct 2. African American 3. Fresh Baked Bread (seen on all kinds of ads. Guess they can't say "Freshly" baked. "...Well, it was fresh when we baked it.."
  7. Well... since this thread is apparantly still alive, I'll chime in with another question and statement. The Statement: The problem with Pre-fab places is that in order to keep costs down, the may not use the best components. I personally don't mind putting together a PC (though I'm a bit nervous about installing a MOBO, so I usually get that preinstalled)... The rest is mostly plug and play. So the trade off for me is that I'd rather spend the money quality parts that I chose and put them together myself than to have someone do it for me with cheaper parts.. Now ... to my question..... I was looking at the specs posted for Phil's PC. My question would be .. why the overclocking??? As I mentioned, one of my main concerns is stability so this is another thing that makes me nervous. Why overclock to get an extra .1ghz or so? Is it really worth doing considering the potential headaches? Wouldn't I be better off just buying a slightly faster chip run at manufacturer's specs than trying to tweek a little extra out of it?
  8. Thanks for that.... Ok.. I guess I need to investigate the AMDs too. Dang... Life is so much easier when you can just be prejudiced and not actually have to think about stuff..

  10. Thanks ZK "From my understanding, the dual core is especially effecting " I assume you meant "effective" That's what I thought. So prob. will go w/ the low end D. As far as Intel vs AMD.... There are a couple reasons why I lean towards intel. 1. Past experience -- My p4 has been rock solid - no problems. 2. Alot of stuff seems to be geared for Intel (software and HW)... AMD works but... 3. Benchmarking.... Doesn't really matter much to me. If AMD can squeeze an extra nanosecond thats cool, but I don't think it would make much difference in the real world. Soo... Just feel better going w/ a car I trust wont break down rather than a car that can go 1 mph faster.
  11. I had a related question. In deciding what I want for my DAW, I wasn't sure the best way to go regarding CPU. I have a preference for Intel just for stability and software compatability reasons. anyway... the options I was looking at are. 1. High end Intel P4. 2. Intel Pentium D - Dual Core processors. 3. Intel Dual processors (2 chips) Have a gut feeling that the Dual Core or dual processor model might give better performance. Any suggestions on choosing? -cost vs benefit etc.
  12. I took a look and the RME w/ Mutiface box is about $900 MOTU 2408mk3 is about $950 The Delta 1010 is $400 in between is Lynx Studio Technology AES16 at $625 but it has no breakout box and I'm not sure how/what to connect it to. Would one of these other options be a significant upgrade from the Delta series cards? Would she be better off spending the extra $400-500 for the upgrade? Thanks
  13. Howdy all. My sister is soon going to be purchasing a new DAW and has asked my advice on what to get. I know most of the computer stuff she will need. I was thinking of acutually sending her to ADK computers since they seem relatively reasonable and are pre-configured for audio. Anyway, the one thing I was not sure of is the soundcard. 5 years ago, when I was getting mine set up, I got the M-Audio Delta 1010 as it was about the best around for the money. However, I don't know what advances have been made since then. What's the best bet in the under $500 range? Still M-Audio? MOTU Eidorl RME What do I need to look at? I've tried web searches, but no one seems to have any info on comparison between the pro-audio cards. thanks
  14. Originally posted by rickenbacker198 How do you like the n72 so far?? thinking of building one myself. NB So far I love it. It was a fun project and sounds great! I don't have much experience with high end preamps (this is my first), so can't compare it to Great River or others, but I can say it is a huge step up for me. As far as the cost goes, I don't think I saved much with just the one channel over buying one. The big savings will come when I start adding channels. From here on, it will only cost about $300 a channel for each one I add on. For the first time, you need to buy the Chassis and Power Supply. The chassis holds up to 8 preamp units. (though they discount the PS cost if you buy a complete kit). Added to this, I didn't have the tools, so I needed to buy a soldering station and assorted other tools to complete the project. Anyway, I have all of that now, and have some experience under my belt for soldering etc, so things should go cheaply and more smoothly for my next pre. Now, I'm just saving up till I can get more. I'm planning on one more N72 then moving to some of the other models A12, J99 etc. Ultimately, I couldn't be happier with the N72 and the whole experience.
