Wouldn't worry too much about theft - realistically your laptop, iPod, and xbox are going be taken before anybody thinks about snagging a big ungainly amp or guitar. Had some folks who pulled the fire alarm my freshman year in another building and walked thru the hallway putting laptops in a big sack from every room that was left unlocked Fortunately they got wise and dumped the bag behind some bushes and laptops were returned to students.

There were at least 3 guitar players on my floor freshman year, the only one that bothered anybody was the one who sounded like a tin can of bees going chugga chugga all the time. Cheap ibanez + cranked metal zone + crappy practice amp is not a good thing...
