  1. Wow thanks fletcher. i think thats pretty much what i already sort of had in mind......in essence, we need to record these inaudible frequencies because in the end although these frequencies may not be heard, they are "heard." i know that sounds weird but its something you can hear if its not there vs. when it is there. The same teacher also mentioned in class that it is probably a better idea if were recording at 24 bit to use 88KHz instead of 96KHz to make the computer be able to utilitze info better without having to go down to decimals where everything will work out evenly, is this true and is there any significant loss of quality with a small jump like that?
  2. ok so i have a slightly techy question this time. The Nyquist Theorem says that the sample rate is twice as high as the highest frequency that can potentially be recorded, i.e. 192KHz sample rate = 96 KHz as the highest recorded frequency. ok BUT human hearing range is from 20Hz - 20KHz, so what does all that extra room really sound like? i had a teacher explain it but i guess im still a little fuzzy on this. Does having a higher sampling rate give you a bigger stereo field since you essentially have a larger "box" to put frequencies in vs. a smaller sampling rate which would give you a smaller "box" so to speak? and are most pro recordings now done at 192/24 bit? or is there a different combination thats sort of the standard now?
  3. yeah im really thinking about when i have to get a computer for my future studio im going the G5 route, or the newest equivalent. im probably not going to know what to do with a computer thats actually worth a damn. oh and get this you guys, i ordered that 2 gig ram card i mentioned a few days ago and i find out YESTERDAY that it wont fit my computer. how {censored}ty is that? at least it wasnt but 25 bucks....anyone need a 2 gig ddr2 ram card? so i guess im going to have to see if i can either get a refund or just throw those guys a little more dough for a DDR card instead of the DDR2. at this point im kinda thinking maybe theres not much point in upgrading this computer any more. but i dont know, i think a little more RAM definitely couldnt hurt (im running just 512MB right now).
  4. oooh youre talking about processor speed. hmm actually honeslty off the top of my head i really cant remember what speed my processor is. im sort of new to computer hardware and upgrading stuff for using audio BUT im not a complete noob. is it difficult to install another, say 2gHz processor? any idea on cost? and i recently ordered that 2 gig ram card, its as easy as sliding it into the slot right? i mean theres nothing else i really have to do is there, because i was kind of under the impression that all you have to do is drop it in and PRESTO! more ram! or no?
  5. when you say faster, what sense are you talking about? hard drive speed? the standard is like 7200 RPMs right? and how do you run multiple CPUs to back up the plugs? sorry i ask a lot of questions, im just very curious as to how to make things more efficient.
  6. awesome. thats what i wanna hear. oh you guys think that 2.5 gigs of RAM will be sufficient for most stuff? I.E. no more than 15 tracks most likely with a moderate amount of plugs running.
  7. nerol, i will be getting a mac book pro laptop here pretty soon and it will have leopard installed with logic pro. ive also never really dealt with macs before letalone logic pro. im kind of nervous about using it because i will have to get adapt very quickly because it will be a school use computer. are either of these very difficult to get used to? and im pretty familiar with DAW basics (solo mute automation and similar conotrols) just not logic so much.
  8. i have a minor tidbit to throw in as well....my dealing with presonus have been this: got a firepod. two months later it craps out on me. i just recently (yesterday) find out that theres a burned out firewire chip. BUT this is after like 4 or 5 emails back and forth with tech support (Brad Perkins was very helpful......bperkins@presonus.com). so i send my firepod in and theyve had it for like 4 or 5 weeks now. my take is that they were pertty easy to deal with but id probably have a backup because though they get stuff done and are pretty helpful people, it does take them a good minute to get to you. i also called tuesday and was on hold about 20 minutes before i got someone to tell me that it had already been fixed and was about to be sent out along with that info about the burned out firewire chip and updated firmware. so yeah theyre still ok in my book. oh the only part that sucks is im out 85 bucks because of it.
