  • HELP! What the heck is goin on?

Right now im recording my acoustic through a marshall condenser mic, into a mixer, and then into my computer. When i play back my acoustic, it sounds like it has flange on it or something wierd like that, but theres no affects and its just some wierd natural thing. Its really annoying, how can i stop it?

i just recorded my voice and it didn't do the flange thing, its kinda wierd like all the soundwaves are bouncing off eachother, what goin on?

Its a phase issue. Do a google search on Microphone phasing issues for detailed explanation.
What it basically is, is sound is making it to one mike before the other causing that effect. It happens most often when an acoustic player uses 2 mikes and does the one man band thing singing and playing at the same time. The bleedover from the guitar gets into the vocal mike and is out of phase with the guitar mike. Its usually overcome by doing seperate tracke of each so there no chance of bleedover, or just optimizing the mikes so the bleedover isnt too apparent. There is a rule on how far a mike has to be away from the source like asy a speaker to cancel the phasing, Or a good set of ears and headphones can help to null it out also. My best suggestion is though to use only one mike at a time and multitrack till you read up and learn how to use multiple mikes to optimum effect.

Move the mic around, you may be getting some reverb on the signals causing an odd sound.

I think he is only using 1 mic which means the sound is possibly bouncing, causing the phasing issues.

yeah i think fuzzball is on the right track, but i did move the mic around, different angle distance, room, and i didn't detect any difference, but i will experiment with it a little more tommorow. Let me know if you have any more suggestions

Make sure you don't have something screwed up in your routing on playback. Maybe something is being sent through 2 signal paths in your soundcard, mixer or DAW.

phase issues w/ one mic caused by reflections? what are you recording in a glass bathroom? sounds like the wrong track to me. try turning 'software monitoring' or whatever your daw has off.

                  I have seen it.

But now that he has tried that I would consider other alternatives. Do you have the audio playing back through your monitors while recording? Your mic may be picking that up.

Reflections off a music stand near the mic? I had this happen with a vocalist once. She was reading the words off a sheet on the music stand and would move around a bit while singing. This resulted in a very short delay of a signal from the side of the microphone, enough that it was picked up and created a very subtle flangelike sound as she moved her head. Here's the song: http://media.putfile.com/In-a-Minute Keep in mind, this was recorded in about 1976/8 or so to four track. If I recall correctly the vocals were recorded to the final open track. No effects (other than an EMT plate reverb) were used in the recording, so any "flanging" happened in the recording process. She, and the producer, liked the vocal and decided to leave it as was.

Try posting an MP3 of the problem parts.

My first guess: leakage from the headphones is causing an out of phase extra source, or the OP accidentally left the monitor mix with a live track playing, same effect.

That is also a strong possibility.
